English summary: The essays in this volume deal with three areas: One part focuses on the pre-Islamic history of the Jews, the development of the rabbinate and the relationship between Jews and Christians. This is followed by texts on methodological issues, the historical value of rabbinic texts and the legacy of the apocalyptic. Ten of the essays deal with Tractate Avot, its origins and its reception, four of them with the redaction history of Sifra to Leviticus. The outline of the Midrash Wayosha segues into thematic studies of rabbinic literature. The work concludes with essays on the research history (J.J. Rabe, L. Zunz and H.L.Strack). All the essays have been given a standard form and any overlapping has been deleted if this was deemed expedient. Essays that were published in Spanish or Italian have been translated and everything has been updated to a certain extent. German description: Die hier gesammelten Aufsatze befassen sich mit drei Themenbereichen: Ein Teil gilt der vorislamischen Geschichte der Juden, der Entwicklung des Rabbinats und dem Verhaltnis von Juden und Christen. Es folgen Texte zu Methodenfragen, dem historischen Wert rabbinischer Texte, und dem Erbe der Apokalyptik. Zehn Arbeiten kreisen um den Traktat Avot, seine Entstehung und Nachgeschichte, vier weitere gelten der Redaktionsgeschichte von Sifra zu Levitikus. The Book of Genesis in Late Antiquity: Encounters between Jewish and Christian Exegesis examines the relationship between rabbinic and Christian exegetical writings of Late Antiquity in the Eastern Roman Empire and Mesopotamia. The volume identifies and analyses evidence of potential ‘encounters’ between rabbinic and Christian interpretations of the book of Genesis. Each chapter investigates exegesis of a different episode of Genesis, including the Paradise Story, Cain and Abel, the Flood Story, Abraham and Melchizedek, Hagar and Ishmael, Jacob’s Ladder, Joseph and Potiphar and the Blessing on Judah. The book discusses a wide range of Jewish and Christian literature, including primarily rabbinic and patristic traditions, but also apocrypha, pseudepigrapha, Philo and Josephus. The volume sheds light on the history of the relationship between Jews and Christians in Late Antiquity, and brings together two scholars (of Rabbinics and of Eastern Christianity) in a truly collaborative work. The research was funded by an award from the Leverhulme Trust at the Centre for the Study of Jewish-Christian Relations, Cambridge, UK, and the Centre for Advanced Religious and Theological Studies of the Faculty of Divinity, University of Cambridge, UK.

This volume contains the papers of a workshop on Jewish epigraphy in antiquity organized at Utrecht University in 1992. Among the participants were collaborators of the Cambridge Jewish Inscriptions Project and of the Tübinger Atlas des Vorderen Orients project. Elisa Klapheck sucht nach den politischen Implikationen der jüdischen Theologie. Im Zentrum des Politischen steht das gewandelte Verhältnis des Menschen zu Gott. Die ersten Geschichten der Bibel präsentieren Gott noch als Despoten, der eine unbeschränkte Theokratie verlangt, während er sich später als politischer Partner des Menschen selbst an Rechtsnormen bindet. Bereits im ersten Bund mit Noah ist eine Garantie des künftigen Willkürverzichts Gottes gegenüber seinen Geschöpfen zu erkennen. Dann wiederum beschreibt die Tora die Entstehung von Rechtsverhältnissen zwischen den Menschen. Die jüdische Version der polis ist dabei der kahal, dessen Ausweitung über die einzelne Gemeinde hinaus – anders als in der griechisch-römischen Tradition – nicht zu einer vereinheitlichenden Staatsbildung führt, sondern zur dezentralen politischen Wirklichkeit der Diaspora. In die wechselhafte gesellschaftliche Realität muss Gott immer wieder neu integriert werden. Die talmudische Tradition fordert die tätige Selbstkorrektur des Menschen und führt nicht zu einer Relativierung des göttlichen Rechts, sondern zur Bestätigung der Tora als gesetzlicher Maßstab. Kennzeichnend für die religiös-säkulare Spannung des (rabbinischen) Judentums wird der produktive Konflikt mit Gott, der die jüdische Tradition zu einer Theologie der säkularen Gesellschaft weiterentwickelt. Klaphecks facettenreiche Interpretationen zeigen den Reichtum dieses Traditionsbestandes, werfen Schlaglichter auf politisch-theologische Positionen aktueller Debatten. Zu Fragen nach Ausgestaltung des egalitären Rechtsstaats, im Blick auf die Stadt als Paradigma des Politischen, zu Diskussionen um die Bundesstaatlichkeit der EU liefert die jüdische politische Theologie erstaunliche Anstöße. Die Diaspora avanciert zum Vorbild einer pluralistischen Globalisierung und sogar die prinzipielle Begründung von Frauen- und Minderheitenrechten kann aus dem Ideenreservoir des Judentums begründet werden.
