Excerpt from Studies in English Syntax Of the three papers here published the first appeared originally in the Publications of the Modern Language Association of America, new series, vol. viii (1900); the second was published in Modern Language Notes, Baltimore, vol. xix (1904). Both have been revised and augmented. The third paper has not before been published. The three belong together, being essays in interpretative syntax. The larger purpose of these essays is to interest the reader in the structure of the English language, to show him the wide reach of syntactical problems, and to discover and interpret by a scrutiny of all periods of the language some of the natural laws that underlie the architecture of English speech. It remains for the author to thank his critics, friendly and otherwise, for their comments on the first two papers as originally published. He would not be understood as underrating the service of statistics in syntax; but, believing as he does, that syntax is the autobiography of language, he believes more in weighing than in counting, and less in tabulation than in correlation. Excerpt from Studies in the English of Bunyan The following pages contain the results of one term's work in the class-room, on the English of Bunyan. So much interest was manifested in these minute investigations into words and sentences that I have been led to gather up such results of our study, however slight and incomplete, as might attract the attention of teachers who care for any methods of training young scholars to habits of fine literary discrimination, and greater painstaking in their own composition. The plan of study here adopted calls first for the parsing of the sentence. Find the predicative combination, which is the framework of the sentence. Then fit in the other words where they belong, to the subject or to the predicate. If it be a compound sentence, take up the next clause, and define it as co-ordinate or subordinate to the principal or other clause, and then analyze as before. After the grammatical analysis, the sentence should be reviewed for the sake of the etymology of every word, and whatever philological principles can be applied to it. Then the rhetorical analysis.
