In this volume thirty new studies have been specially commissioned from scholars in seven countries to treat key texts and cultural phenomena from the Homeric age to the medieval period. A wide variety of critical approaches are employed to challenge orthodoxies and to present fresh perspectives on the literature, art and history of classical antiquity, late antiquity and the middle ages. Attractive features of the volume include the treatment of newly emerging areas of inquiry in addition to canonical texts and the representation of views of established international scholars at the forefront of the discipline. A recurrent motif of the volume emerges in the interpretive benefits of combining philological acumen with theoretical and intertextual considerations. This accessible and provocative book will be of interest to classicists, historians, art historians, students of comparative literature, and anyone concerned with the immense cultural legacy of classical Mediterranean civilisation. Greek and Latin quotations are accompanied by translations throughout.

The scholarship of T. P. Wiseman on the late Roman Republic is remarkable in combining vivid and detailed historical insight into the social, political and topographical realities of that period with a sympathetic understanding of late Republican literature, particularly the poetry of Catullus. Roman Studies contains twenty-eight of his major periodical contributions up to 1983, and published for the first time 'The Masters of Sirmio', which explores the economic, political and literary associations of the great villa on Lake Garda associated with the family of Catullus.

The Poetics Of Late Latin Literature written by Jaś Elsner and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-11-18 with Literary Criticism categories.

The aesthetic changes in late Roman literature speak to the foundations of modern Western culture. The dawn of a modern way of being in the world, one that most Europeans and Americans would recognize as closely ancestral to their own, is to be found not in the distant antiquity of Greece nor in the golden age of a Roman empire that spanned the Mediterranean, but more fundamentally in the original and problematic fusion of Greco-Roman culture with a new and unexpected foreign element-the arrival of Christianity as an exclusive state religion. For a host of reasons, traditionalist scholarship has failed to give a full and positive account of the formal, aesthetic and religious transformations of ancient poetics in Late Antiquity. The Poetics of Late Latin Literature attempts to capture the excitement and vibrancy of the living ancient tradition reinventing itself in a new context in the hands of a series of great Latin writers mainly from the fourth and fifth centuries AD. A series of the most distinguished expert voices in later Latin poetry as well as some of the most exciting new scholars have been specially commissioned to write new papers for this volume.
