Not illustrated. 1900 edition. Excerpt: ... of art and logic."4 Like the French, the Japanese nation is too apt to embarrass itself with wording, logic, classification, simplicity, and comprehensiveness, in an attempt to form a code, no matter whether constitutional or statutory. In this respect the Japanese nation is far from resembling the English who have left the different parts of their constitution just where the wave of history had deposited them, having never attempted to bring them' together, to classify or complete them or to make a consistent and coherent whole. It should be remembered, however, that the resemblance of the Japanese constitution to the French is simply in form, and not in spirit. When we consider its spirit and fundamental principles, we can easily perceive that the one is as far separated from the other as the heavens are from the earth. 1 C/. the preface to Ito's Commentaries on japanese Constitution. ' Cf." Ilbert, Legislative /lletlzods and Forms. ' Boutmy, Constitutional Law, p. 50. 4 Boutmy, op. cit., p. 6. 91. We insist that the Constitution of Japan, like that of England, shares the nature of a treaty--a treaty between the Emperor and the people; for it is the outcome of prolonged agitation for liberty on the part of the people. But the treaty was formed in an extraordinary manner, namely, the Emperor ordained it without consulting the people on its content, while the people tacitly agreed to give it binding power out of respect for tradition, by which we mean to refer chiefly to the spirit of loyalty, the time-honored custom of respecting the Emperor. Now the essential characteristic of a treaty pure and simple is not to bring down everything to a few simple axioms and to follow them out to their logical consequences....

Excerpt from Studies in the Social Sciences, 1912-1916, Vol. 4: Continuation of Studies in Sociology, Economics, Politics, and History This fact leads to a discussion of terms. For the stage of military Operations just mentioned, the terms military occupa tion, belligerent occupation, hostile occupation, or follow ing the French usage, simply occupation, have been indis criminately employed. During the last few years we have heard much of the military occupation of Cuba, Porto Rico, and the Philippines by the United States, and of China by the united powers. Yet each case represents a different phase of occupation. Speaking more precisely only the last mentioned is a case in point throughout, such as is contemplated in our subject, though the other cases are analogous up to the signing of the treaty of peace with Spain. Elinor C. Ostrom, a Nobel prize winning political economist, made important contributions to common pool resources, economic governance, and polycentricity. Viviana A. Zelizer, a prominent economic sociologist, has done groundbreaking work on how culture shapes our economic lives. Together, the work of Ostrom and Zelizer spans the disciplines of economics, sociology, political science, and public policy by exploring the social relations and community-based organization of everyday life. Both scholars examine the norms, social connections, and cultural impacts of exchange and governance. This volume explores their contributions and builds off of their research programs to explore the social movements, community recovery, and war, and women’s issues across a variety of disciplines, including economics, political science, sociology, history, and archaeology. Inspired by Zelizer’s 2019 Ostrom Speaker Series lecture for the F. A. Hayek Program for Advanced Study in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at the Mercatus Center at George Mason University, this volume explores the connections between the work of Elinor Ostrom and Viviana Zelizer. Beginning with a lead chapter by Zelizer where she reflects on the connections between her work and Ostrom’s oeuvre, the volume brings together scholars who tease out some of the important concepts and implications of Ostrom and Zelizer’s research. This volume furthers economic inquiry by ensuring that the critical examinations of these timely and important themes are made available to students and scholars.

The Economics Of Empire written by Maureen E. Ruprecht Fadem and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-12-30 with Political Science categories.

The Economics of Empire: Genealogies of Capital and the Colonial Encounter is a multidisciplinary intervention into postcolonial theory that constructs and theorizes a political economy of empire. This comprehensive collection traces the financial genealogies associated with the colonial enterprise, the strategies of economic precarity, the pedigrees of capital, and the narratives of exploitation that underlay and determined the course of modern history. One of the first attempts to take this approach in postcolonial studies, the book seeks to sketch the commensal relation—a symbiotic "phoresy"—between capitalism and colonialism, reading them as linked structures that carried and sustained each other through and across the modern era. The scholars represented here are all postcolonial critics working in a range of disciplines, including Political Science, Sociology, History, Peace and Conflict Studies, Legal Studies, and Literary Criticism, exploring the connections between empire and capital, and the historical and political implications of that structural hinge. Each author engages existing postcolonial and poststructuralist theory and criticism while bridging it over to research and analytic lenses less frequently engaged by postcolonial critics. In so doing, they devise novel intersectional and interdisciplinary frameworks through which to produce more greatly nuanced understandings of imperialism, capitalism, and their inextricable relation, "new" postcolonial critiques of empire for the twenty-first century. This book will be an excellent resource for students and researchers of Postcolonial Studies, Literature, History, Sociology, Economics, Political Science and International Studies, among others.

History And Historians Of Political Economy written by Werner Stark and has been published by Transaction Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on with Business & Economics categories.

Written over fifty years ago, History and Historians of Political Economy is now being published for the first time. John Maynard Keynes, after reading the manuscript, called Stark “one of the most learned men on these matters that I have ever come across.” Its publication is an important event in the study of the history of social ideas, particularly economic ideas. Werner Stark's most significant contribution to scholarship is his extensive work in the sociology of knowledge. In this volume, he reveals his parallel analysis of the history of economic thought, highlighting the paramount influence of social and historical factors. The themes of Stark's work are extraordinarily contemporary. He discusses economic historiography and the rational reconstruction method, issues that continue to be debated today. History and Historians of Political Economy is divided into two parts. The first section explains the beginnings of the history of economic thought as well as the theoretical and historical approaches towards the subject. The second section examines the relationship between phenomena and the explanation of phenomena theory. Stark illuminates the insights and limitations of the various approaches of study to the history of economic thought by analyzing the works of Eugen Dühring, Wilhelm Roscher, Karl Marx, Joseph Schumpeter, and many other prominent scholars. History and Historians of Political Economy is of significant value to the studies of economics and sociology. Stark's book raises a number of critical questions: How should past theories be understood and explained? What is the relationship between ideas and events? Do economic theories reflect universal truths or relative ones? These issues are as unsettled today as when originally presented. History and Historians of Political Economy is an essential addition to the libraries of economists, political theorists, sociologists, and historians of ideas.
