"This thesis presents a variety of work on the topic of slow light. It contains research that surveys the many different physical systems capable of producing slow light, and culminates in a project that demonstrates a novel application of slow light related to all-optical phased-array beam steering. It is first shown that high-bandwidth pulses can be substantially delayed with minimal absorption and broadening when transmitted through a cesium vapor cell and tuned between the Cs D2 hyperfine resonances. Next, possibilities for the production of slow light in fiber resonator structures are explored. The delay of a pulse on transmission through a low-finesse fiber ring is measured, and coupled-resonator-induced transparency, a phenomenon analogous to the electromagnetically-induced transparency that is commonly used to create slow light, is demonstrated in a fiber-based coupled-resonator structure. It is then shown that slow light can be created using stimulated Brillouin scattering in an optical fiber, and how specific control of the pump beam's intensity and frequency spectrum can enable slowing of high bandwidth pulses as well as pulse delays and advancements that are tunable over a wide range. A series of experiments that explore the phenomenon of pulse delays and advancements using saturable media are then presented, including work with Erbium-doped fiber and PbS quantum dots. Finally, it is shown how slow light can be applied to the problem of temporal pulse mismatch in a pulsed, scanning, multi-aperture laser radar"--Leaf vii.

"Slow and fast light" constitute a broad class of science and technology that can dramatically change the group index of a medium over a certain wavelength range. This thesis is composed of studies regarding both fundamental aspects and applications of slow light. The thesis starts with some discussion on two fundamental questions. The first one is how much momentum a photon carries within a slow-light medium, and what kind of force is experienced by a slow-light medium when a photon enters or leaves it. The second issue is how the noise properties of an optical field change as it propagates through a slow-light medium. The second part of the thesis deals with the applications of slow light for tunable time delays. For such applications, one of the key figures of merit is the maximum fractional delay that a slow-light element can achieve. I first present a method with experimental demonstrations for improving the maximum fractional delay using a multiple-gain-line medium. Second, I present a design with experimental demonstration for how to achieve simultaneous tunable delay and advancement using slow and fast light in a single module. I then propose a design of a digitally tunable module using channelized slow light, which can be useful for optical packet delays, etc. The third part of the thesis studies the use of slow light to enhance the performance of spectroscopic interferometers. I start with the derivation of the spectral sensitivity of two-beam and multiple-beam interferometers with slow-light media incorporated in them. I show both theoretically and experimentally that the spectral sensitivity is proportional to the group index of the medium inside the interferometers. Second, I propose and demonstrate experimentally a new type of Fourier-transform interferometer using tunable slow light. I then analyze the performance of three types of slow-light media for interferometry applications. Lastly, I present a design of an on-chip slow-light spectrometer as well as some studies on slow-light waveguides using photonic crystal structures."--Leaves ix-x

The propagation of light in dispersive media is a subject of fundamental as well as practical importance. In recent years attention has focused in particular on how refractive index can vary with frequency in such a way that the group velocities of optical pulses can be much greater or much smaller than the speed of light in vacuum, or in which the refractive index can be negative. Treating these topics at an introductory to intermediate level, Fast Light, Slow Light and Left-Handed Light focuses on the basic theory and describes the significant experimental progress made during the past decade. The book pays considerable attention to the fact that superluminal group velocities are not in conflict with special relativity and to the role of quantum effects in preventing superluminal communication and violations of Einstein causality. It also explores some of the basic physics at the opposite extreme of very slow group velocities as well as stopped and regenerated light, including the concepts of electromagnetically induced transparency and dark-state polaritons. Another very active aspect of the subject discussed concerns the possibility of designing metamaterials in which the refractive index can be negative and propagating light is left-handed in the sense that the phase and group velocities are in opposite directions. The last two chapters are an introduction to some of the basic theory and consequences of negative refractive index, with emphasis on the seminal work carried out since 2000. The possibility that "perfect" lenses can be made from negative-index metamaterials-which has been perhaps the most controversial aspect of the field-is introduced and discussed in some detail.

"Slow light is light that travels at unusual, extreme group velocities - sometimes as slow as walking speed or slower. Light waves can be described by many velocities, but for a narrow-band pulse of light (a carrier frequency modulated by an envelope), the group velocity is the speed of the pulse envelope. The term slow light also encompasses other exotic group velocities due to similar techniques, including fast light, stopped light, and backwards light. The science of slow light has been established over the past several years, and research attention is now turning to potential applications of slow light. One application of slow light is as an all-optical true-time delay. Two slow light methods in optical fibers, stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) and dispersive delay, are used to provide a controllable pulse delay in a prototype slow-light phased-array laser radar, called SLIDAR. These slow light methods compensate the group delay mismatch of pulses of 6 ns duration while the phased array is steered in two dimensions. A phase control system is described that maintains phase lock among three signal channels and a reference channel, each containing 2:2 km of optical fiber, while accommodating the demands of the slow light techniques. Residual phase error is kept below [pi]/5 radians (1/10 wave) RMS. Slow light can also enhance the spectral sensitivity of spectrometers and interferometers. A design for a slow-light-enhanced nanophotonic spectrometer is presented. One important use of spectrometers is to detect specific chemicals, and I describe an approach to multivariate optical computation, which can be used for automatic chemical spectrum recognition. This technique, which could one day be implemented with a slow-light-enhanced spectrometer as a single-chip chemical detection platform, is explored experimentally in the visible spectrum using a spatial light modulator"--Pages viii-ix.

This book discusses design, modeling, and the characterization of slow-light photonic crystal waveguides. Guidelines are developed to obtain slow-light waveguides with broadband characteristics and with low disorder-induced losses. Three functional devices are proposed and studied: A tunable dispersion compensator, a tunable optical delay line, and a high-speed electro-optic modulator. Optical and microwave measurements confirm the designs.

Over the past several years, researchers have been intrigued by the possibility of using nonlinear optical methods to exercise unprecedented control over the propagation velocity of light pulses through material systems. Exotic effects such as slow light, fast light and even stored light have been observed in the laboratory. Now, optical scientists are turning their attention toward developing useful applications of slow light, including controllable optical delay lines, optical buffers and true time delay methods for synthetic aperture radar. This article reviews recent progress in developing slow-light methods for these applications.
