Research was concerned with the study of lownoise parametric amplifiers. Study was divided into 2 concurrent tasks: (1) an investigation of electron beam parametric amplifiers, and (2) an investigation of solid-state parametric amplifiers. Summaries are presented of studies on both space-charge-wave and cyclotron-wave devices. Some new and powerful analytical techniques were developed for the study of the noise behavior of complex systems with degenerate electron-beam modes. Research is reported on a circuit-wave amplifier, a generalized coupled mode theory, and an experimental program on a symmetric contraflow coupler. Results of work on a single-diode, solid-state parametric amplifiers are described. The measured response of two degenerate, parametric amplifiers operated in a balanced configuration with a 3-db coupler is shown. Two balanced amplifiers of this type were operated in cascade with contiguous operating bands in order to achieve extremely wide bandwidth. The analysis and design of traveling-wave parametric amplifiers utilizing both forward- and backwardwave interactions is also described. An experimental amplifier using eight varactors was built and tested. (Author).

This paper is a study of low-noise amplification in the near direct current frequency range. The paper is a survey of the problem and no ultimate amplifier is presented in conclusion. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the problem and to present conclusions as to best class of amplifiers to use in this frequency range. Two classes of amplifiers are considered. The chopper amplifier and the semiconductor diode parametric amplifier. It is concluded that the semiconductor diode parametric amplifier is inherently the lower noise device of the two. There are no intrinsic noise sources in this amplifier and noise arises mainly from parastic effects which theoretically can be made arbitrarily small. The use of this type of amplifier at low frequencies marks a new and successful application of a device usually associated with microwave frequencies. The first section of the paper is a critique of the various figures of merit used in specifying noise performance. The significance and proper use of the noise figure is discussed. The section on the chopper amplifier includes analysis involving both the junction transistor and the field effect transistor. The conclusions are that the best overall performance of the chopper amplifier results when the junction transistor is used with a low impedance source. (Author).

This report covers that phase of Air Force Contract No. AF 33(616)-8030 which is concerned with the theoretical exploration of noise contributors and possible noise reduction mechanisms in the dc pumped, beam type parametric amplifier. The noise performance of dc pumped, beam type parametric amplifiers employing an entrance quadrupole as a noise transformer are investigated analytically. It is found that traveling wave couplers which excite a linearly polarized mode lead to tube noise characteristics similar to those encountered in conventional colinear beam tubes. A new type of coupler, based on cyclotron harmonic interaction, is shown to lead to noise temperatures of order 20K in a magnetic field 1/4 the cyclotron resonance value. Experimental work is recommended to confirm this theoretical investigation.

Research concerned the development of solid-state devices and traveling wave tubes for use in a low noise microwave receiver. Two low-noise, L-band tunnel-diode amplifiers were built and delivered. Both amplifiers had voltage-gain-bandwidth products exceeding the objective specifications. The best experimental results were as follows: center frequency 1270 mc, bandwidth 64 mc, gain 26 db, noise figure 5 db. Three parametric subharmonic oscillators (pump frequency 5700 mc, signal frequency 2850 mc) were built and delivered. A four-terminal low-noise modulate-demodulate L-band parametric amplifier was built and tested. A traveling-wave-tube amplifier is described which has demonstrated a capability for very low noise operation in the S-band range of microwave frequencies. Effort included theoretical studies concerning noise reduction in beam devices, coupled with experimental tests. The final tube design achieved minimum tube noise figures as low as 2.6 db and broadband noise figures of less than 3.5 db in the 2100 - 3500 mc frequency range.

This report describes the research activity on InSb varactors and the development of a cryogenically cooled, low noise, broadband parametric amplifier at X-band. Detailed measurements and evaluation of InSb and GaAs varactors have been made to determine their relative merits. Due to an anomalous current effect observed in InSb varactors, the final amplifier was delivered with a GaAs varactor. The amplifier had a noise temperature of 70 K, at 500 Mc bandwidth, and a mean gain of 16 db, when cooled to 77 K. (Author).
