Some studies of the dynamics of motion in the upper atmosphere are analyzed. The analysis is concerned mainly with barotropic stability theory. It is shown that divergence tends to stabilize a west wind zonal flow. It is also shown that unstable disturbances superimposed on an asymmetric jet can transfer momentum northward across the jet. The mechanics of the breakdown of the polar night jet is briefly discussed. (Author).
