Planting mangroves for stabilizing man-made marl shorelines in the Florida Keys is an environmentally preferred alternative to seawall and riprap construction. In June 1977, 126 mangroves were planted along three marl shorelines to determine the relative significance of (a) tidal height, (b) degree of exposure to erosion forces, and (c) plant size upon growth and survival. This report documents findings for plant survival and growth after 5 years.

Holevoet and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023 with Artificial substrates (Aquatic biology) categories.

Mangrove restoration nurseries in island communities like the U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI), face unique challenges, like maximizing nursery sustainability while optimizing plant growth. Clumping of plants in the wild has been shown to ameliorate environmental stress; however, it is unknown if this process is beneficial in a nursery setting. Further, no studies, to our knowledge, have examined the use of recycled crushed glass as substrate within mangrove nursery settings. To address these challenges, this study explored the effect of planting density on survivorship and growth, as well as the use of crushed glass repurposed from local restaurant waste, as a mangrove substrate, to offset potting soil costs and to reduce the nursery footprint. Rhizophora mangle propagules were collected from five USVI locations (Perseverance Bay, St Thomas East End Reserves (STEER), and Oasis Cove Marina on St. Thomas, and Annaberg Bay on St. John) and planted in two substrates (MiracleGrow Potting Soil and recycled crushed glass) with three treatments (one propagule, two propagules (clumped), and a propagule and wooden dowel control) in a land-based nursery, located at the University of the Virgin Islands on St. Thomas, VI. Survival, plant growth (height, leaf area, total leaf and branch numbers), and the timing of leaf emergence of R. mangle seedlings were measured for six months. At the end of the experiment, 120 plants were sacrificed, dried, and weighed for above and belowground biomass calculations. Of the 480 propagules planted, 98% survived until the end of the experiment; six of the eight seedlings that died were planted in glass. A significant relationship was found between site, substate, and clumping, with the tallest plants being those from Perseverance Bay (PR), St. Thomas, in clumped and single treatments, and from all sites in the control clumping treatment. Only substrate was found to be significant for leaf area, with soil substrates producing plants with greater leaf area than glass. Propagules in soil also had the greatest relative and absolute growth rates over the study period. Site, substrate, and clumping treatment were found to significantly affect root to shoot ratios, although post-hoc tests could not identify differences. This study’s goals were to maximize plant survival and growth; data show that plants grew better alone than clumped, that soil treatments grew taller with greater leaf area than glass treatments, but that nearly all plants survived in both substrates. Soil treatments sprouted sooner with a greater number of leaves and branches than glass treatments. For nurseries prioritizing lower costs and seeking to increase sustainability, using recycled crushed glass is a viable option. These results highlight efficient and effective restoration techniques with practical applications for restoration teams and local communities in the USVI and beyond. Future studies should look at the success of these treatments through to out-planting, to examine if and how these treatments affect continued growth and survivorship.
