Binary sequences find increasing use in electrical engineering applications of ranging, time measurement and communications. A property of interest in these applications is the autocorrelation function of the binary sequence or pair of sequences. Of the 2 to the nth power possible sequences of length n, only a few have usable autocorrelation function, except for very particular cases. In this report, known properties of complementary sequences are reviewed. Almost complementary sequences are defined and the procedure to obtain them is outlined. A formula is derived for the number of different autocorrelation functions of the 2 to the nth power possible sequences of length n bits. A computer search is implemented with the objective of discovering sequences with desirable autocorrelation functions. (Author).

Properties of the correlation properties of the linear sequences are discussed and a new and promising approach to the problem of correlation of linear sequences is developed. Families of linear sequences of equal period are generated from a single shift register. The class of sequences with bounded cross correlation is determined as well as the bounds on the cross correlation function of certain maximal sequences and hence on the corresponding family of sequences. The appendix presents a discussion of elementary properties of binary sequences, elementary algebraic properties of sequences, and error correcting codes. (Author).

Complementary binary sequences invented by M.J.E. Golay in an investigation of infra-red multi-slit spectrometry are investigated. The basic results obtained by Golay are formalized and new concepts and techniques are developed for examining the characteristics of these special binary codes. This work has developed new understanding of the structure and methods for the decomposition of complementary sequences. Complementary sequences have the property of an infinite correlation peak to ambiguity ratio when detected with a matched filter. These binary sequences should find much application as pseudo-random noise modulation signals for both radar and communications systems. Several invariant properties of complementary codes are proved through the use of the Hamming distance concept. Several computer searches for complementary sequences are described and the actual computer programs for the CDC 1604 are included.

In experiments which require the production of binary sequences by subjects, it has been found repeatedly that the interpretation of experimental results depends critically upon the nature of nonrandom sequential patterning among successive responses. Examples from the literature are discussed, where an experiment was originally misinterpreted because interresponse pattering was not considered. This patterning has become an object of study in itself. It has been suggested (Ross and Levy, 1958) that the length of the sequence of responses is an important determinant of the nature of the interresponse patterning. Differences between subjects in the type of patterns produced have also been reported. In addition, the nature of patterning has been found to vary depending upon the instructions given and the experimental procedures used. The present study was designed to evaluate the importance of these three variables (sequence length, subjects, and instructions).
