Covered both theoretically and by extensive correlated tests are free convection at Rayleigh Numbers above 10 to the 10th power, with varying geometries and radii of curvature of heat rejection surfaces. A design method is developed, with examples of its use, for design of rejection devices for power development in sea water. A prototype was built and tested in Port Hueneme Harbor. The extent of and dissipation of a plume of heated water over the convector are predicted theoretically and correlated with laboratory tests and the harbor tests. Selected materials were exposed for corrosion and marine fouling at shallow water, 300 feet and 4,500 feet deep in the open ocean; heat transfer results were correlated with those predicted theoretically and determined in full scale laboratory experiments. No fouling was observed on heated surfaces at 100, 120 and 140 degrees F, but fouling appeared to be accelerated on non-heated parts of the test apparatus exposed to the warmed water.
