(cont.) It is seen that a square root transformation which forces the waves to be guided close to the outer boundary is more invisible than those generated by either linear or quadratic transformation. Simplified cylindrical cloaks may produce a larger scattering at nonnormal incidences than that from an object without any cloak. In addition, we suggest using a small number of homogeneous and anisotropic metamaterial layers to construct a practical cloak with satisfying performance with normal incidence and oblique incidence. Genetic algorithm was used to optimize the practical multi-layer structures. It is shown that using an optimized 4-layer cloak, the normalized scattering cross section from a perfect electric conductor cylinder can be reduced from 2.19 to 0.0039 with normal incidence. Another optimized 4-layer cloak working for the incidence of 30° is shown able to reduce the scattering cross section from 1.175 to 0.013. The latter cloak exhibits reduce scattering over a large range of incidence angles.

Abstract : The invisibility cloak is the device that prevents the system including the cloak and the concealed target from detection. In 2006, the first invisibility cloak was realized for operating at microwave frequencies. That cloak was made of the resonant metamaterials composed of metallic inclusions. Such success inspired the intensive study on the invisibility devices for the last decade. However, the existing invisibility systems have the limitations in common that deteriorate the cloak efficiency and challenge the implementation. In this dissertation, we proposed the approaches to design the invisibility cloaks composed of the dielectric artificial materials in order to improve the cloaking performance and bring the cloaks to the practical. To reduce the complexity of implementation and broaden the operating bandwidth, the transmission cloak composed of the arrays of identical high permittivity dielectric cylinders was designed. The spatially dispersive profile of the effective refractive index was manipulated by controlling the periodicities of the array sections. The designed cloak achieved to guide the electromagnetic wave bypassing the concealed region at broadband in the full-wave simulations. To further enhance the bandwidth, reduce the complexity and accommodate large targets, we proposed the geometrical optics based transmission cloaks composed of the optical elements, i.e. prisms/lenses, made of homogenous and isotropic dielectric materials. The 2D cloak operating for TM incidence efficiently hide large targets at multiple bands with broad bandwidths in the simulations since the cloak possesses the preservation of both the energy and the phase. Based on the 2D cloak, two types of 3D cloaks, i.e. the extrusion cloaks and the rotation cloaks, were developed. The cloaking capability of the former type was confirmed computationally and experimentally. The latter type also achieved cloaking effect in the simulations, which showed the advantage of low sensitivity to the incident waves' polarizations and the great promise to the implementation. Furthermore, the superluminal effect supported in the photonic crystals made of high permittivity dielectrics was applied to the transmission cloak that was designed based on transformation optics. Following such approach, the elements in the cloak medium could exceed the subwavelength and operate off resonance.

In this work, we study two different manipulations of electromagnetic waves governed by macroscopic Maxwell's equations. One is frequency conversion of such waves using small intrinsic material nonlinearities. We study conversion of an input signal at frequency w1 to frequency Wk due to second or third harmonic generation or four-wave mixing using coupled-mode theory. Using this framework, we show there is a critical input power at which maximum frequency conversion is possible. We study in depth the case of third harmonic generation, its solutions, and their stability analysis. Based on the dynamics of the system, we propose a regime of parameters that 100%- efficient frequency conversion is possible and propose a way of exciting this solution. We also look at same analysis for the case of degenerate four-wave mixing and come up with 2d and 3d designs of a device that exhibits high-efficiency second-harmonic generation. Second, we consider proposals for invisibility cloaks to change the path of electromagnetic waves in a certain way so that the object appears invisible at a certain frequency or a range of frequencies. Transformation-based invisibility cloaks make use of the coordinate invariance of Maxwell's Equations and require complex material configuration e and p in the cloak. We study the practical limitations of cloaking as a function of the size of the object being cloaked. Specifically, we study the bandwidth, loss, and scattering limitations of cloaking as the object gets larger and show that cloaking of objects many times larger than the wavelength in size becomes practically impossible.

A lightly surreal story of misfortune, menace, and high-end stereo equipment in the cutthroat, capitalistic world of modern China. An NYRB Classics Original The hero of The Invisibility Cloak lives in contemporary Beijing—where everyone is doing their best to hustle up the ladder of success while shouldering an ever-growing burden of consumer goods—and he’s a loser. Well into his forties, he’s divorced (and still doting on his ex), childless, and living with his sister (her husband wants him out) in an apartment at the edge of town with a crack in the wall the wind from the north blows through while he gets by, just, by making customized old-fashioned amplifiers for the occasional rich audio-obsessive. He has contempt for his clients and contempt for himself. The only things he really likes are Beethoven and vintage speakers. Then an old friend tips him off about a special job—a little risky but just don’t ask too many questions—and can it really be that this hopeless loser wins? This provocative and seriously funny exercise in the social fantastic by the brilliantly original Ge Fei, one of China’s finest living writers, is among the most original works of fiction to come out of China in recent years. It is sure to appeal to readers of Haruki Murakami and other fabulists of contemporary irreality.

Transformation electromagnetics is a systematic design technique for optical and electromagnetic devices that enables novel wave-material interaction properties. The associated metamaterials technology for designing and realizing optical and electromagnetic devices can control the behavior of light and electromagnetic waves in ways that have not been conventionally possible. The technique is credited with numerous novel device designs, most notably the invisibility cloaks, perfect lenses and a host of other remarkable devices. Transformation Electromagnetics and Metamaterials: Fundamental Principles and Applications presents a comprehensive treatment of the rapidly growing area of transformation electromagnetics and related metamaterial technology with contributions on the subject provided by a collection of leading experts from around the world. On the theoretical side, the following questions will be addressed: “Where does transformation electromagnetics come from?,” “What are the general material properties for different classes of coordinate transformations?,” “What are the limitations and challenges of device realizations?,” and “What theoretical tools are available to make the coordinate transformation-based designs more amenable to fabrication using currently available techniques?” The comprehensive theoretical treatment will be complemented by device designs and/or realizations in various frequency regimes and applications including acoustic, radio frequency, terahertz, infrared, and the visible spectrum. The applications encompass invisibility cloaks, gradient-index lenses in the microwave and optical regimes, negative-index superlenses for sub-wavelength resolution focusing, flat lenses that produce highly collimated beams from an embedded antenna or optical source, beam concentrators, polarization rotators and splitters, perfect electromagnetic absorbers, and many others. This book will serve as the authoritative reference for students and researchers alike to the fast-evolving and exciting research area of transformation electromagnetics/optics, its application to the design of revolutionary new devices, and their associated metamaterial realizations.

Transformation Optics-based Antennas is organized into two chapters that follow an introduction that presents the basic principles of the transformation optics concept. Two types of transformation are presented, coordinate transformation and space transformation. Implementations using metamaterials are also discussed. Chapter One focuses on coordinate transformation in the design of devices capable of modifying the electromagnetic appearance of a radiating source. Transformation of a directive radiation pattern into an isotropic one (and vice-versa) through space stretching and compression, respectively, and the possibility of creating multiple beams are also studied. Chapter Two deals with devices designed using space transformation concepts. Quasi-conformal transformation optics (QCTO) are applied for the design of lenses, either to compensate for the phase shift created by the conformation of an array of sources or to steer a beam to an off-normal direction. Focuses firstly on the theoretical tools that define transformation optics Address the origin of these concepts by analyzing Fermat’s principle Details the basic approaches and methods needed to design practical applications of transformation optics concepts
