The term "elites" has wide-ranging definitions but generally refers to people who have disproportionate control over, or access to, economic, cultural social, and political resources (Khan, 2012). Research with elites is experiencing a recent revival. This rising interest can be attributed, in part, to the perceived role of elites in recent dramatic increases in inequality. Five decades after Laura Nader's (1972) call for researchers to "study up," to analyze "the colonizers rather than the colonized, the culture of power rather than the culture of the powerless, the culture of affluence rather than the culture of poverty" (p. 289), the study of elites is still relatively small but growing.
