The traditional Jew has always accepted the study of Torah as central to his or her way of life. But without the ability to effectively analyze and interpret the text, one misses the opportunity to gain a deep and authentic appreciation of the Torah's beauty and profundity. In Studying the Torah: A Guide to In-Depth Interpretation, Avigdor Bonchek equips the reader with the proper analytic methods to make reading the Bible both a serious pursuit and a pleasurable pastime. In order for the reader of the Torah text to delve into its veiled, but ultimately visible, layered messages, he or she must first learn the appropriate interpretive techniques. These skills are the same as those used by the classic Jewish Torah commentators (Rashi, Ramban, Ibn Ezra, and others), all of whom were experts in what scholars today refer to as a "close reading" of the text. Among the "Keys to Interpretation" discussed in this book are the significance of word order, opening sentences, repetitions, word associations, psychological dimensions, and similarities and differences between texts. Each key is illustrated by several examples that offer fresh insight into otherwise familiar text, and the author offers his own original and comprehensive in-depth interpretation of two central biblical stories: the story of Joseph and the ten plagues.

An accessible introduction to how to read, study, and understand Torah—the Bible and related sacred texts that have grown up around it. For everyone who wants to understand Torah, this book shows the way into an essential aspect of Judaism, and allows you to interact directly with the sacred texts of the Jewish tradition. Guided by Dr. Norman J. Cohen, rabbi and professor of midrash at Hebrew Union College–Jewish Institute of Religion, The Way Into Torah helps us explore the origins and development of Torah, why it should be studied, and how to do it. What Torah is. The texts, and beyond: Not simply the Five Books of Moses, Torah refers to much more than written words. The different approaches to studying Torah. The many ways Jews have interacted with Torah through the ages and how, by learning to read Torah ourselves,we can connect it to our lives today. The levels of understanding Torah. How Torah can come alive in different ways, at different times; and how new meanings of Torah are discovered by its readers. Why Torah study is a part of the Jewish experience. How it allows us to experience God’s presence—and why the Rabbis called Torah study more important even than belief in God. This guide offers an entrance into the world of Torah, and to its meaning for our lives. The Way Into Torah shows us why reading Torah is not the same as reading anything else—and enables us to become a part of a chain of Jewish tradition that began millennia ago, and remains unbroken today.

"One picture that often comes to mind when one thinks of Torah study is a group of bearded men clad in long black coats and hats huddled around a table piled high with texts. Women do not appear in this image; if anywhere, they are in the kitchen preparing a meal, keeping the children from disturbing their fathers, or working to support the family so that their husbands can devote their energies to learning. Such is a common view as to "the role of women" in Torah study. In "And All Your Children Shall Be Learned": Women and the Study of Torah in Jewish Law and History, Shoshana Pantel Zolty helps dispel this myth." "Through an analysis of halakhic literature, the Mishnah, the Talmud, and other classical texts, as well as Jewish and general world history, Zolty explores the evolution of Jewish education for women. In each period, from biblical times through to the twentieth century, we find exceptional women, usually of rabbinic families, some of whom are cited as authorities in certain areas of Jewish law, and some of whom may have mastered the entire gamut of Torah study. The book traces the development of the legal literature pertaining to the instruction of Torah to women and the various issues surrounding it. It also discusses the twentieth-century initiative of Sarah Schenirer, the founder of the Bais Yaakov Schools, and analyzes the place of the study of Torah by women in Orthodox settings. Throughout the work, ample footnotes and source material document the veracity of the claim that women have been and are permitted to become learned." "Zolty sifts through history to accord women their rightful place in the history of Jewish education. Along the way she presents the basic philosophy of education, the role and status of women in traditional Judaism and the attitudes of scholars with respect to the religious roles of women." "For women who think that traditional study is closed to them, or for men who feel that women should not learn Torah, or for any reader seeking to fully understand the value and history of Torah study and education in Judaism, "And All Your Children Shall Be Learned" will be both eye-opening and interesting, shedding light on a long-neglected topic, the contribution of women to the study of Torah."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Jewish Women S Torah Study written by Ilan Fuchs and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-11-20 with Religion categories.

One of the cornerstones of the religious Jewish experience in all its variations is Torah study, and this learning is considered a central criterion for leadership. Jewish Women’s Torah Study addresses the question of women's integration in the halachic-religious system at this pivotal intersection. The contemporary debate regarding women’s Torah study first emerged in the second half of the 19th century. As women’s status in general society changed, offering increased legal rights and opportunities for education, a debate on the need to change women’s participation in Torah study emerged. Orthodoxy was faced with the question: which parts, if any, of modernity should be integrated into Halacha? Exemplifying the entire array of Orthodox responses to modernity, this book is a valuable addition to the scholarship of Judaism in the modern era and will be of interest to students and scholars of Religion, Gender Studies and Jewish Studies.

This is a work of practical theology, a book not about Judaism but of Judaism. Talmud Torah does two things. First, in its pages, which highlight representative sources of the Oral Torah of Judaism, readers study about studying the Torah, which Rabbinic Judaism put forth as the way to God's presence.
