Over 3 million years ago, our ancestors realised that rocks could be broken apart for sharp edges, to cut and slice meat. The discovery made for a good meal. It also changed the fate of our species and our planet. In this lively and learned book, Chip Colwell charts three great leaps in humankind’s relationship with objects and belongings, from the discovery of tools to the production of endless commodities. How did we start out as primates who needed nothing, and end up as people who need everything? With colourful characters, astonishing archaeological discoveries, and reflections from philosophy and culture, Colwell’s quest for answers takes readers to places both spectacular and strange: the Italian cave featuring the world’s first painted art; a Hong Kong skyscraper where a priestess channels the gods; a mountain of trash whose height rivals Big Ben or the Statue of Liberty. Humans make stuff, but our stuff makes us human—and our love affair with things may be our downfall. With landfills brimming and oceans drowning in plastic, now is the time for a fourth and final leap for humanity: to reevaluate our relationship to the things that make, and could break, our world.

‘It takes courage to be an empathetic leader. And I think if anything the world needs empathetic leadership now, perhaps more than ever.’ Jacinda Ardern Jacinda Ardern was swept to office in 2017 on a wave of popular enthusiasm dubbed ‘Jacindamania’. In less than three months, she rose from deputy leader of the opposition to New Zealand’s highest office. Her victory seemed heroic. Few in politics would have believed it possible; fewer still would have guessed at her resolve and compassionate leadership, which, in the wake of the horrific Christchurch mosque shootings of March 2019, brought her international acclaim. Since then, her decisive handling of the COVID-19 pandemic has seen her worldwide standing rise to the point where she is now celebrated as a model leader. In 2020 she won an historic, landslide victory and yet, characteristically, chose to govern in coalition with the Green Party. Jacinda Ardern: Leading with Empathy carefully explores the influences – personal, social, political and emotional – that have shaped Ardern. Peace activist and journalist Supriya Vani and writer Carl A. Harte build their narrative through Vani’s exclusive interviews with Ardern, as well as the prime minister’s public statements and speeches and the words of those who know her. We visit the places, meet the people and understand the events that propelled the daughter of a small-town Mormon policeman to become a committed social democrat, a passionate Labour Party politician and a modern leader admired for her empathy and courage.

White House Inc written by Dan Alexander and has been published by Penguin this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-09-22 with Political Science categories.

An in-depth investigation into Donald Trump’s business—and how he used America’s top job to service it. White House, Inc. is a newsmaking exposé that details President Trump’s efforts to make money off of politics, taking us inside his exclusive clubs, luxury hotels, overseas partnerships, commercial properties, and personal mansions. Alexander tracks hundreds of millions of dollars flowing freely between big businesses and President Trump. He explains, in plain language, how Trump tried to translate power into profit, from the 2016 campaign to the ramp-up to the 2020 campaign. Just because you turn the presidency into a business doesn’t necessarily mean you turn it into a good business. After Trump won the White House, profits plunged at certain properties, like the Doral golf resort in Miami. But the presidency also opened up new opportunities. Trump’s commercial and residential property portfolio morphed into a one-of-a-kind marketplace, through which anyone, anywhere, could pay the president of the United States. Hundreds of customers—including foreign governments, big businesses, and individual investors—obliged. The president's disregard for norms sparked a trickle-down ethics crisis with no precedent in modern American history. Trump appointed an inner circle of centimillionaires and billionaires—including Ivanka Trump, Jared Kushner, Wilbur Ross, and Carl Icahn—who came with their own conflict-ridden portfolios. Following the president’s lead, they trampled barriers meant to separate their financial holdings from their government roles. White House, Inc. is a page-turning, hair-raising investigation into Trump and his team, who corrupted the U.S. presidency and managed to avoid accountability. Until now.

Digital Journalism Drones And Automation written by Cate Dowd and has been published by Oxford University Press, USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

""The next generation of systems and practices in journalism will require knowledge beyond online editing techniques, aggregation, social media flow and assumptions about fake news. The profession may also want to aim for ethical practices in journalism to be embedded in algorithms for new systems. Engagement in an early design phase may also be useful for scoping reforms for online and social media legislation. However, these pursuits require higher levels of understanding about backend data and online systems, and development of formal vocabulary for journalism concepts and practices. This new domain knowledge should also be expressed in ontological models, informed by participatory approaches. Some problems to be addressed include editorial control issues and fair distribution of news stories and other challenges of data and online systems. Problematic issues should also include the lack of transparency in corporate data sharing arrangements. The semantic language for future systems for journalism will be distinctly different from the vocabulary and classifications used for online news tags. It will also need to distinguish the vocabulary for social media things in context of journalism. Most importantly, the design of new systems will need participatory and semantic design methods that can support the need for high-level knowledge of data and semantic search methods. The influence of social media partnerships in news and backend data sharing are other problem areas. Data via integrated media systems in news organisations flows onto cloud servers where it is processed with a myriad of methods. These hubs are for the new generation of data sharing, where large volumes of data are sorted and processed at accelerated speeds, for a range of purposes. Cloud servers are now literally the highest levels of digital convergence, other than legislation, and the latter is lagging. This is where data is shared for advertising, social media benefits and other domain purposes. Integrated media systems bring benefits for global networked news media organisations, but they also enable more monetisation of data via cloud servers. ""--

General Extenders written by Maryann Overstreet and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-09-02 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

General extenders are phrases like 'or something', 'and everything', 'and things (like that)', 'and stuff (like that)', and 'and so on'. Although they are an everyday feature of spoken language, are crucial in successful interpersonal communication, and have multiple functions in discourse, they have so far gone virtually unnoticed in linguistics. This pioneering work provides a comprehensive description of this new linguistic category. It offers new insights into ongoing changes in contemporary English, the effect of grammaticalization, novel uses as associative plural markers and indicators of intertextuality, and the metapragmatic role of extenders in interaction. The forms and functions of general extenders are presented clearly and accessibly, enabling students to understand a number of different frameworks of analysis in discourse-pragmatic studies. From an applied perspective, the book presents a description of translation equivalents, an analysis of second language variation, and practical exercises for teaching second language learners of English.
