Sad rozstajny ukazał się w roku 1912. W momencie wydania był to spóźniony debiut, z dzisiejszej perspektywy jest to pierwsza książka wielkiego poety. Warto się dokładnie przyjrzeć temu zbiorowi, usytuowanemu pomiędzy wczesnymi wierszami Bolesława Leśmiana, publikowanymi w młodopolskich czasopismach, a znakomitymi tomami ogłoszonymi w dwudziestoleciu międzywojennym. Warto zapytać, kim był Leśmian znajdujący się w połowie drogi do wielkości i jak pracowała wówczas jego poetycka wyobraźnia. Pierwszym wrażeniem, jakie nasuwa się po lekturze dwudziestu dwu artykułów składających się na książkę Stulecie Sadu rozstajnego, jest przekonanie o potrzebie i sukcesie zaprezentowanych w niej spojrzeń badawczych oraz o bardzo dobrej, przemyślanej kompozycji całości. Prowadzi ona od rozważań nad tytułem Leśmianowskiego zbioru ku analizom wybranych jego wątków i przekrojów, dopełniającym się, ale i wchodzącym z sobą, dzięki sąsiedztwu, w wyraźny dialog nieraz odmiennych wniosków. Konstrukcja tej książki daje ważny, przekrojowy wgląd w leśmianologię i rozmaite metody analizy tekstu, na których zyskuje wyłaniający się z niej obraz zbioru interpretowanego po latach, i wiele mówi o naszych – polonistycznych, poetologicznych – orientacjach i przeorientowaniach, o zmieniających się obszarach lektury i mocno rozciągniętej skali, normie historycznoliterackiego czy interpretacyjnego pisarstwa naukowego. Whatever critical scalpel one selects for dissecting the literary works of Bruno Schulz (1892-1942), there will always be a certain degree of textual resistance which cannot be broken. Or in other words, taking off one of Schulz's many masks, one will probably never avoid the impression that a new mask has emerged. This book contributes to the three most typical critical strategies of reading Schulz's works (combinations, fragmentations, reintegrations) - being fully aware, of course, of the relativity of each particular approach. In addition, the book sets out to explore all of Schulz's creative output (i.e. his stories as well as his graphic, epistolary and even literary critical works), as one of Schulz's main goals was exactly to cross artificially set up boundaries between, among other things, different artistic media of expression. The book for the first time brings together leading Schulzologists (Jarzębski, Robertson, Sproede) and their prospective successors (Augsburger, Gorin, Kato, Suchańska-Drażyńska, Underhill, Wojda), established Polish academics (Dąbrowski, Markowski, Skwara, Weretiuk) and their foreign counterparts (De Bruyn, Gall, Meyer-Fraatz, Schulte, Zieliński), scholars primarily working on other authors (Anessi, Śliwa, Żurek) and those focusing on other art forms (Sánchez-Pardo, Watt). In Invisible Listeners, Helen Vendler argues that such poets must invent the language that will enact, on the page, an intimacy they lack in life. Through brilliantly insightful and gracefully written readings of these three great poets over three different centuries, Vendler maps out their relationships with their chosen listeners. For his part, Herbert revises the usual "vertical" address to God in favor of a "horizontal" one-addressing God as a friend. Whitman hovers in a sometimes erotic, sometimes quasi-religious language in conceiving the democratic camerado, who will, following Whitman's example, find his true self. And yet the camerado will be replaced, in Whitman's verse, by the ultimate invisible listener, Death. Acropolis: the Wawel Plays, brings together four of Wyspiański’s most important dramatic works in a new English translation by Charles S. Kraszewski. All of the plays centre on Wawel Hill: the legendary seat of royal and ecclesiastical power in the poet’s native city, the ancient capital of Poland. In these plays, Wyspiański explores the foundational myths of his nation: that of the self-sacrificial Wanda, and the struggle between King Bolesław the Bold and Bishop Stanisław Szczepanowski. In the eponymous play which brings the cycle to an end, Wyspiański carefully considers the value of myth to a nation without political autonomy, soaring in thought into an apocalyptic vision of the future. Richly illustrated with the poet’s artwork, Acropolis: the Wawel Plays also contains Wyspiański’s architectural proposal for the renovation of Wawel Hill, and a detailed critical introduction by the translator.
