The Conquest Of Nature written by David Blackbourn and has been published by Random House this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-11-30 with History categories.

The modern idea of 'mastery' over nature always had its critics, whether their motives were aesthetic, religious or environmentalist. By investigating how the most fundamental element - water - was 'conquered' by draining fens and marshes, straightening the courses of rivers, building high dams and exploiting hydro-electric power, The Conquest of Nature explores how over the last 250 years, the German people have shaped their natural environment and how the landscapes they created took a powerful hold on the German imagination. From Frederick the Great of Prussia to Johann Gottfried Tulla, 'the man who tamed the wild Rhine' in the nineteenth century to Otto Intze, 'master dambuilder' of the years around 1900, to the Nazis who set out to colonise 'living space' in the East, this groundbreaking study shows that while mastery over nature delivers undoubted benefits, it has often come at a tremendous cost to both the natural environment and human life.

This volume addresses environmental and technological dimensions of the Hamburg storm flood of 1962, a key event of contemporary German history that still lacks any systematical consideration. Our articles provide new insights into risk awareness and disaster control of modern societies, with a particular focus on the role of technology in the context of natural disasters, and questions of disaster control by the armed forces, offering new approaches for historical disaster research as well as contemporary history. The relations of nature-technology and society will be systematically addressed, while also dicussing new concepts such as "environmental coherence" or forms of resilience in urban and rural contexts. This German case study also shows that the experiences of the Second World War were still present in the perception of the storm flood. In order to embed this key event into a larger framework of coastal societies and their changing attitudes towards risk, nature and technology, we have included additional historical case studies about storm floods in the 18th and 19th century and comparable events in the Netherlands in 1953.

Over the last decade, the concept of dark tourism has attracted growing academic interest and media attention. Nevertheless, perspectives on and understanding of dark tourism remain varied and theoretically fragile whilst, to date, no single book has attempted to draw together the conceptual themes and debates surrounding dark tourism, to explore it within wider disciplinary contexts and to establish a more informed relationship between the theory and practice of dark tourism. This book meets the undoubted need for such a volume by providing a contemporary and comprehensive analysis of dark tourism.

Catastrophes, it seems, are becoming more frequent in the twenty-first century. According to UN statistics, every year approximately two hundred million people are directly affected by natural disasters_seven times the number of people who are affected by war. Discussions about global warming and fatal disasters such as Katrina and the Tsunami of 2004 have heightened our awareness of natural disasters and of their impact on both local and global communities. Hollywood has also produced numerous disaster movies in recent years, some of which have become blockbusters. This volume demonstrates that natural catastrophes_earthquakes, hurricanes, floods, etc._have exercised a vast impact on humans throughout history and in almost every part of the world. It argues that human attitudes toward catastrophes have changed over time. Surprisingly, this has not necessarily led to a reduction of exposure or risk. The organization of the book resembles a journey around the globe_from Europe to North Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, and from the Pacific through South America and Mexico to the United States. While natural disasters appear everywhere on the globe, different cultures, societies, and nations have adopted specific styles for coping with disaster. Indeed, how humans deal with catastrophes depends largely on social and cultural patterns, values, religious belief systems, political institutions, and economic structures. The roles that catastrophes play in society and the meanings they are given vary from one region to the next; they differ_and this is one of the principal arguments of this book_from one cultural, political, and geographic space to the next. The essays collected here help us to understand not only how people in different times throughout history have learned to cope with disaster but also how humans in different parts of the world have developed specific cultural, social, and technological strategies for doing so.

Langeoog Biographie Einer Deutschen Insel written by Jörg Echternkamp and has been published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-08-06 with History categories.

Endlichkeit written by Andreas Bihrer and has been published by transcript Verlag this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-02-29 with Social Science categories.
