L'archeologia ci aiuta a scoprire la storia del primo apostolo, dalla sua casa a Cafarnao, in Galilea, dove ospitava Gesù, fino alla sua tomba (150 d.C. circa), rinvenuta sotto l'altare maggiore della basilica di San Pietro, finora mai adeguatamente spiegata. In questo libro il più celebre archeologo italiano, combinando l'analisi delle scritture all'indagine archeologica, ricostruisce la figura storica e umana dell'uomo cui Gesù affidò la fondazione della sua comunità.

Durante il suo lavoro di fotografo e reporter, Sergio si imbatte in un'occasione inaspettata e spiazzante: accompagnare in Svizzera una persona che sta andando a morire. L'uomo, affetto da una grave malattia neurodegenerativa, ha deciso di ricorrere al suicidio assistito e, dopo una lunga trafila medica e burocratica, ha finalmente ottenuto la "luce verde", il permesso di morire. Vuole che Sergio racconti la sua storia, quella di chi è "costretto a umiliarsi, viaggiando lontano da casa come una specie di clandestino, per poter esercitare fino alle estreme conseguenze il proprio sacrosanto diritto al libero arbitrio, che nel nostro paese ci viene negato". Ma non vuole avere un nome né un volto, nessuno deve poterlo riconoscere. Di fatto, per Sergio significherebbe trascorrere con lui le sue ultime quarantotto ore sulla Terra. Sergio accetta. Questa è la storia vera di quelle quarantotto ore e dei millequattrocento chilometri che i due uomini hanno percorso insieme: dal momento in cui si sono stretti la mano fuori da un aeroporto del Sud Italia fino a quello in cui l'uomo gli ha rivolto le sue ultime parole sulla poltrona di un monolocale di Basilea. È questa la "clinica svizzera" in cui Erika da otto anni accompagna i pazienti al suicidio, dopo essersi scambiata decine di lettere con ognuno di loro e averli incontrati e visitati per concedere loro la "luce verde". La prospettiva da cui Ramazzotti racconta la vicenda è in tutti i sensi unica: da una parte per la sua posizione irripetibile di narratore-testimone, dall'altra per il suo sguardo delicato, rispettoso e capace di mettersi continuamente in gioco. Con scrittura elegante e densa, riesce, in questa storia vera che a tratti pare sconfinare nel romanzo, ad accendere in noi un rovello di riflessioni e domande di portata universale, un duello etico interiore, e mette in moto un'altalena di emozioni contrastanti che culminano con la sorpresa per il dénouement finale: un nome, un cognome e uno spaventoso segreto che sono un vero e proprio colpo di scena, una scoperta capace di rimettere in discussione tutte le certezze che avevamo accumulato fino a quel momento.

This volume gathers chapters related to the condition of women in the ancient novel. To broaden the perspective, it integrates not only papers dealing with the Greek and Roman novel as a literary genre in its own right, but also as a historical document involving aspects as diverse as history, archaeology, sociology and the history of law.
