While doing fieldwork in the modernizing Javanese city of Solo during the late 1980s, Suzanne Brenner came upon a neighborhood that seemed like a museum of a bygone era: Laweyan, a once-thriving production center of batik textiles, had embraced modernity under Dutch colonial rule, only to fend off the modernizing forces of the Indonesian state during the late twentieth century. Focusing on this community, Brenner examines what she calls the making of the "unmodern." She portrays a merchant enclave clinging to its distinctive forms of social life and highlights the unique power of women in the marketplace and the home--two domains closely linked to each other through local economies of production and exchange. Against the social, political, and economic developments of late-colonial and postcolonial Java, Brenner describes how an innovative, commercially successful lifestyle became an anachronism in Indonesian society, thereby challenging the idea that tradition invariably gives way to modernity in an evolutionary progression. Brenner's analysis centers on the importance of gender to processes of social transformation. In Laweyan, the base of economic and social power has shifted from families, in which women were the main producers of wealth and cultural value, to the Indonesian state, which has worked to reorient families toward national political agendas. How such attempts affect women's lives and the meaning of the family itself are key considerations as Brenner questions long-held assumptions about the division between "domestic" and "public" spheres in modern society.

It is very common in the traditional community in Indonesia that women sometimes act as real women. This is based on the root word of women, empu, meaning as individuals who are to be honoured greatly. In this case the role of women are very central. I found that this philosophical means of women has on Naniek Widayati. She does not appear as a genuine woman only, nor as a person who does ordinary works. Even though she grew up as a daughter of a Batik entrepreneur in Laweyan, Surakarta, her characteristics were not merely influenced by those environmental. It has been proved by completing her doctoral dissertation recently. Through her sensitivity in art, culture, and space that she obtained when she was studying architecture, and from the point of view of archaeology, Naniek was able to define the environment of Laweyan as an integrated system which is formed by sub-systems, which affected the environment of Laweyan through the artefact and nonartefact and created the town as a district area, which is reflected a great interaction between the environment of social cultural and local ecology. Since I knew her 20 years ago, Naniek grew up as a firm person who never says “give-up” in every situation and I know that this becomes one of her obligations as a Muslim who obeys the doctrine of her religion to study further and further. Satu dekade lebih, narasi kota-kota di Indonesia mengalami banyak perubahan yang bersifat fundamental, dimana pemicu utamanya adalah bergesernya bandul kekuasaan yang bergerak dari pusat ke daerah. Nalar desentralisasi serta merta menjadi titik mula gelombang proses, dinamika maupun perubahan yang terjadi dalam beragam dimensi. Ada banyak kebimbangan untuk mencari bentuk dari perubahan yang bersifat transisi maupun tantangan untuk merespon ketimpangan yang ada. Sebab beragam kisah yang hadir sesudahnya adalah gambar tentang kota yang tumbuh dalam ragam kepentingan, dan tak lagi menempatkan negara sebagai orientasi tunggal tapi juga kepentingan-kepentingan politis, modal maupun kombinasi keduanya. Skema kota yang lahir dalam beberapa dekade terakhir adalah perubahan dengan lapis praktek-praktek kekuasaan yang tersebar. Tersebar oleh kemungkinan untuk membangun kebijakan dan kepentingan kota tidak hanya dari nalar negara namun juga membesarnya peluang bagi keterlibatan publik secara lebih luas. Namun publik kota nan luas dan tersebar di kampung-kampung, tetap menjadi potret gelap dari kota yang tumbuh terlalu cepat, dan melaju dalam kepentingan yang semakin tak terjangkau oleh warga. Relasi kampung-kota juga mengalami pergeseran oleh sebab pergerakan kota yang liar, sekaligus kesediaan menahan beban dari skenario kota yang harus tumbuh menjulang ke atas. Setiap ruang dalam kampung-kota lalu hadir sekadar menyangga berbagai kebutuhan kota untuk mampu memenuhi indikator perubahan sekaligus penanda kemajuan. Buku ini, mencoba memberi paparan bagaimana wajah kota dibentuk oleh narasi-narasi yang disusun dari kepingan perubahan yang terjadi dikampung-kampung. Ada kemungkinan kota dan kampung hadir bersamaan sebagai sebuah relasi namun tak sebanding. Namun besar kemungkinan, kota dan kampung hadir tidak bersamaan karena ketiadaan orientasi nan kolektif. Konsekuensi dari dua kondisi tersebut tetaplah sama bahwa kampung-kota hadir jadi hanya sebagai pelengkap dari narasi-narasi kota yang dibentuk oleh kepentingan kapital.
