Providing one of the first book-length accounts of Samuel Beckett's poetry, this work illustrates how Beckett's poetry, and its failures, reconfigure the lyric form. Reading Beckett alongside nineteenth and twentieth century European poets such as Hölderlin, Mallarmé, Rimbaud, Montale, and Apollinaire, the book situates failure in the triangulation of the lyric impulse, subjectivity, and the human voice. Beckett, in his poems, employs lyric tactics that range from deixis, parataxis, and caesura to specific kinds of timbre, resonances, and punctuations. These tactics situate the poetic voice in the liminal points between life and death, event and non-event, beginning and ending, and more broadly, between expression and failure. The book frames these liminalities under the rubric of 'lyric failure'. Moving beyond the usual comparisons with his prose and drama, the study highlights failure as a generative force that structures Beckett's anti-expressive poetics.

Everyone agrees that theology has failed; but the question of how to understand and respond to this failure is complex and contested. Against both the radical orthodox attempt to return to a time before the theology’s failure and the deconstructive theological attempt to open theology up to the hope of a future beyond failure, Rose proposes an account of Christian identity as constituted by, not despite, failure. Understanding failure as central to theology opens up new possibilities for confronting Christianity’s violent and kyriarchal history and abandoning the attempt to discover a pure Christ outside of the grotesque materiality of the church. The Christian mystical tradition begins with Dionysius the Areopagite’s uncomfortable but productive conjunction of Christian theology and Neoplatonism. The tensions generated by this are central to Dionysius’s legacy, visible not only in subsequent theological thought but also in much twentieth century continental philosophy as it seeks to disentangle itself from its Christian ancestry. A Theology of Failure shows how the work of Slavoj Žižek represents an attempt to repeat the original move of Christian mystical theology, bringing together the themes of language, desire, and transcendence not with Neoplatonism but with a materialist account of the world. Tracing these themes through the work of Dionysius and Derrida and through contemporary debates about the gift, violence, and revolution, this book offers a critical theological engagement with Žižek's account of social and political transformation, showing how Žižek's work makes possible a materialist reading of apophatic theology and Christian identity.

Challenging literary histories that locate the emergence of fantastic literature in the Romantic period, David Sandner shows that tales of wonder and imagination were extremely popular throughout the eighteenth century. Sandner engages contemporary critical definitions and defenses of eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century fantastic literature, demonstrating that a century of debate and experimentation preceded the Romantic's interest in the creative imagination. In 'The Fairy Way of Writing,' Joseph Addison first defines the literary use of the supernatural in a 'modern' and 'rational' age. Other writers like Richard Hurd, James Beattie, Samuel Johnson, James Percy, and Walter Scott influence the shape of the fantastic by defining and describing the modern fantastic in relation to a fabulous and primitive past. As the genre of the 'purely imaginary,' Sandner argues, the fantastic functions as a discourse of the sublime imagination, albeit a contested discourse that threatens to disrupt any attempt to ground the sublime in the realistic or sympathetic imagination. His readings of works by authors such as Ann Radcliffe, William Beckford, Horace Walpole, Mary Shelley, Walter Scott, and James Hogg not only redefine the antecedents of the fantastic but also offer a convincing account of how and why the fantastic came to be marginalized in the wake of the Enlightenment.

Opposing both popular "neo-Spinozisms" (Deleuze, Negri, Hardt, Israel) and their Lacanian critiques (Zðizûek and Badiou), Surplus maintains that Lacanian psychoanalysis is the proper continuation of the Spinozian-Marxian line of thought. Author A. Kiarina Kordela argues that both sides ignore the inherent contradictions in Spinoza's work, and that Lacan's reading of Spinoza—as well as of Descartes, Kant, Hegel, Marx, Freud, and Wittgenstein—offers a much subtler balance of knowing when to take the philosopher at face value and when to read him against himself. The notion of sexual sadism emerged from nineteenth-century alienist attempts to imagine the pleasure of the torturer or mass killer. This was a time in which sexuality was mapped to social progress, so that perversions were always related either to degeneration or decadence. These ideas were internalized in later Freudian views of the drives within the self, and of their repression under the demands of modern European civilization. Sadism was always presented as the barbarous past that lurked within each of us, ready to burst forth into murderous violence, crime, anti-Semitism, and finally genocide. This idea maintained its currency in European thought after the Second World War as Freudian-influenced accounts of the history of philosophy configured the Marquis de Sade as a kind of Kantian “superego” in a framework that viewed the Western Enlightenment as unraveled by its own inner demons. In this way, a straight line was imagined from the late eighteenth century to the Holocaust. These ideas have had an ongoing legacy in debates about sexual perversion, feminism, genocide representation, and historical memory of Nazism. However, recent genocide research has massively debunked assumptions that perpetrators of mass violence are especially sexually motivated in their cruelty. This book considers how the late twentieth-century imagination eroticized Nazism for its own ends, but also how it has been informed by nineteenth-century formulations of the idea of mass violence as a sexual problem.

Focusing on moments of continuity and rupture, as well as the thin lines of fracture in Critical philosophy itself, Metaphysics of Nature and Failure in Kant's Opus postumum navigates the rough terrain of Kant's final thoughts. Terrence Thomson argues that Opus postumum constitutes Kant's last attempt to deliver on the promise of a system of speculative reason in a work called 'metaphysics of nature'. He journeys through the drafts left on Kant's desk when he died to encounter their failure to establish this work rather than their projected success. Far from this signaling that we give up on serious study of the Opus postumum, however, Thomson shows how failure is not something Kant shied away from but rather embraced as fuel for his continued thinking. Indeed, it is this failure that opens the door to a greater understanding of the dissonances at the core of Critical philosophy itself. Moreover, it indicates what it means to be in the process of philosophizing and that Kant was well-aware that to think often means to repeatedly fail. Suggesting how the very call for a metaphysics to be established upon the Critical philosophy can only ever fail to abide by the threshold it sets up, this book offers a new perspective on the central bind Kant repeatedly confronts in Opus postumum within the modern European tradition of philosophy. To deliver the system of metaphysics Kant calls for means to transgress the bounds of Critical philosophy, but to attempt to deliver it is nonetheless an unavoidable part of Critical philosophy itself.
