Family businesses are vital to the health of a nation’s economy, but distresses such as economic downturns and the Covid-19 pandemic can put them at grave existential risk. Drawing from her dynamic experience working with her family-owned company MPIL Steel Structures Ltd, Priyanka Gupta Zielinski presents a unique manual to help family businesses thrive, even in times of crisis. Central to it is a survival toolkit – featuring a metaphorical multipurpose hat, a flashlight, a superhero cape, a Swiss Army knife and a parachute – which prepares business owners to face any challenge head on. The book also reveals how the improvisational style of family enterprises can be leveraged better for sustainability, while identifying in their close-knit structure and community-driven approach avenues for meaningful social change. Replete with anecdotes and effective strategies – with an occasional Haryanvi idiom thrown into the mix – The Ultimate Family Business Survival Guide is a must-read for family business and MSME owners everywhere.

The business world is dominated by family businesses of all sizes. Economies and societies depend on them. One tremendous advantage is that they focus on sustainability, long-term business and community support, and survival. Answering the question of how they survive intact and how families can maintain family unity over hundreds of years is essential. To answer this question, interviews with seven multi-century, large multigenerational family businesses from Germany were undertaken to uncover secrets of their success. Chief among health indicators is family cohesion. What these families practice is the use of multiple dimensions of cohesion to bond the widest number of owners to the family and business, and to fulfill the family and business dreams. The specific different mechanisms they use are revealed in this text. Maintaining family cohesion also requires family business leaders to effectively manage the ambiguities that come along with seemingly irreconcilable forms of cohesion and with potentially diverging interests and goals of owners. By exploring the conditions for sustainable family cohesion, the study adds new recommendations for effective family business governance.

Essay from the year 2012 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,3, University of Edinburgh (Business School ), language: English, abstract: The reasons of the successful longevity of many family businesses compared to the short life span of others are not far different from the reasons that glue together family members in a tied long-term relationship. In fact, especially after some generations, when the numbers of members would grow, blood linkages are not enough to guarantee the continuity of the relationship among family members. What makes family relationship last longer are shared values and sense of belonging. In our analysis of three well-established companies, Arco, Musgrave group and Berry Bro & Rudd Limited, we noticed that also family companies’ longevity secret lies in these same principles that maintain together family members through different generations. Adopting family values and extending them to the company culture will determine the long-term survival of family relationship with the business. In the three companies we examined the internal understanding of family’s values appear to define the entire organization’s behaviours.

As a successful business owner, you realize that financial success is just the beginning.you still have many other challenges to face. However, the real threat to the continued success and growth of your business doesn't come from ruthless competitors, spiraling costs, oppressive government regulations, militant unions or runaway inflation. The main threat lies in the managerial practices and policies that you - like too many other business owners - have chosen to follow since the day you started business. Over the years, age and success have become your partners and they demand from you a set of solutions and approaches that are totally different from what you had to use to survive in the "good ol' days." You had the dream, the ability, and the guts to build your business from virtual scratch, but now you must also have the guts to accept the fact that the perpetuation of your business is in your hands and is your responsibility. You've been running so fast and working so hard that it's been difficult for you to take an objective look at what you are doing - or failing to do - to ensure the survival, growth and profitable continuity of your business. Time is your most precious asset, but you only have a finite amount of it. You must begin by making some changes now, while there is still time to make them. In this book, Dr. Danco outlines his recommendations for ensuring the success, continuity, and perpetuation of the business you have built on your sweat, guts, and talent. As a teacher, consultant, and advisor for nearly four decades, to thousands of family-owned or privately-held businesses, he has made it his goal to force business owners to take critical looks at themselves, their actions, their business, and their family - examinations that are absolutely necessary if their dream is to survive. The survival of your company is a vital ingredient in our North American way of life. It depends on your courage and your action.
