Field experiments as ordinarily conducted have been shown to be affected by many gross errors. In the light of these investigations it has become apparent that the results of many of the older experiments are inconclusive or even misleading. Various expedients have been suggested for counteracting experimental error. Some Of these have been quite successful, while others have probably done more harm than good. The pioneer investigations in this field have been of great value in directing attention to the important sources of error and in suggesting possible means for their control. Doubtless at the present time most of the major sources of error are recognized. But the true extent of the errors and the actual practical value Of the methods of counteracting them can be determined only by numerous investiga tions of experimental methods under different conditions. Dak The results obtained from the experiments on the dry land up to and including 1913 have been published In detail. 2 The work was discohtinued at the close Of the season Of 1919 and all of the important results are published here in order to bring the data up to date and to make the unpublished results from all experiments available. Owing to the widely varying climatic conditions, the yields Of the grains show large fluctuations in different seasons. Most Of the. Experiments here reported, however, have been con ducted for a. Sufficiently long period to show quite definitely which are the best varieties and the best cultural methods for growing the various cereals in this region. The results are applicable to a large part of western South Dakota and adj acent portions of northeastern Wyoming, southeastern Montana, and southwestern North Dakota, especially oii-the heavier types Of soil. The average yields Of-wheat, oats, and barley obtained on dry land arenot large, but might be profitable if Seasonal conditions were more uniform. Low yields have been Obtained in several years and failures Of apart of all of the crops in others. High yields were obtained in 1915 and fairly high yields of some crops in 1908, 1909, and 1918. Grain growing alone is not likely to be successful in western South Dakota, but if carried on in conjunction with stock raising will be profitable some years. Excerpt from The Agricultural Situation, Vol. 14: A Brief Summary of Economic Conditions; November 1, 1930 Reported yields of spring Wheat on October 1 showed little change from earlier prospects other than a small per cent increase in produc tion of durum and indicate a crop of bushels of durum and bushels of other spring wheat, making a total of 000 bushels of all spring wheat. The production of durum wheat is practically the same as produc tion last year, but it is bushels, or about 24 per cent, less than the average of the previous five years, due Wholly to a smaller acreage in North Dakota. The crop of other spring wheat is about bushels greater than the crop of last year but bushels less than the 5-year average. The cr0p of spring wheat other than durum is smaller than usual in North Dakota and much smaller in Montana owing to drought conditions, while it is somewhat larger than usual in South Dakota and Washington. The durum wheat yield of 12 bushels per acre is above the bushels secured in 1929 but below the 10-year average yield of bushels. The yield of other spring wheat, reported at bushels per acre, is also. Above last year's yield of bushels. The quality of the durum wheat this year is reported at per cent, or a few points poorer than usual and much poorer than last year. Other spring wheat shows a quality of or a shade better than average, but it also is 2 per cent poorer than last year. The total crop of wheat, spring and winter types combined, is now estimated at bushels which is bushels greater than the crop of 1929 but only bushels above the previous 5-year average and bushels below the big crop of 1928.
