Of all the historical characters known from the time of the Spanish conquest of the New World, none has proved more pervasive or controversial than that of the Indian interpreter, guide, mistress, and confidante of Hernán Cortés, Doña Marina—La Malinche—Malintzin. The mother of Cortés's son, she becomes not only the mother of the mestizo but also the Mexican Eve, the symbol of national betrayal. Very little documented evidence is available about Doña Marina. This is the first serious study tracing La Malinche in texts from the conquest period to the present day. It is also the first study to delineate the transformation of this historical figure into a literary sign with multiple manifestations. Cypess includes such seldom analyzed texts as Ireneo Paz's Amor y suplicio and Doña Marina, as well as new readings of well-known texts like Octavio Paz's El laberinto de la soledad. Using a feminist perspective, she convincingly demonstrates how the literary depiction and presentation of La Malinche is tied to the political agenda of the moment. Parecería razonable ordenar las obras completas de un autor según las fuera pasando de las musas al papel, para así estudiar simultáneamente su evolución estilística, sus procesos mentales creativos, sus técnicas, sus vivencias personales y, en definitiva, su recorrido por este valle de lágrimas. Sin embargo, en este caso no estamos tratando de un autor literario al uso, sino de una personalidad de múltiples facetas en su vida, como explicamos en su biografía. Por ello, nos hemos apartado de la clasificación puramente cronológica. Comienza esta obra con los llamados por el autor Cuadernos, que son poemas breves escritos desde su primera etapa profesional, a mediados de la década de los sesenta, aunque luego fue añadiendo títulos durante muchos años, llegando en su final, cuando la informática le permitía hacer ediciones personales, a redactar un prólogo pocos años antes de su fallecimiento. A continuación, se ha agrupado, siguiendo también su denominación, en Relatos para el otoño, los poemas de su época de madurez, pues no otra cosa significa el título que adoptó, sabiendo ya que su vida iniciaba la inexorable cuesta abajo después de la madurez. La tercera parte se ha titulado Relatos Largos, pues aquí se recopilan los escritos en prosa de mayor extensión y que fue redactando a lo largo de su vida, unas veces recordando anécdotas juveniles y otras novelando episodios vividos personalmente, la mayoría de ellos con un gran sentido del humor y elegante ironía, sin olvidar su permanente sentido moral y cristiano de la vida.
