En Mxico la normatividad ambiental en materia de contaminantes de suelos establece que para identificar zonas contaminadas por elementos potencialmente txicos (EPTs) se debe tomar en cuenta la variabilidad de las concentraciones de fondo a travs del territorio (NOM-147-SEMARNAT/SSA1-2004). No obstante, ante la carencia de datos duros a nivel nacional, y la creciente necesidad de los mismos, se requiere de un procedimiento de bajo costo que sirva como primer proveedor de datos generales para la toma de decisiones de autoridades ambientales. En funcin de esto, en este trabajo se propone una metodologa para determinar de manera sencilla y econmica el grado de peligrosidad en suelos por EPTs, as como una valoracin cualitativa del riesgo ambiental, mediante el clculo del valor de fondo y concentracin de umbral, tal como lo establece la normatividad.

Que entendemos por degradacion quimica del suelo? Antes que eso, debemos entender que el suelo es un recurso natural valioso, ya que es el soporte fisico primordial para la produccion de alimentos, fibras y por ende, para el desarrollo del mundo. Sin embargo, el desafio al que nos enfrentamos los humanos es la comprension y entendimiento de que tambien es un recurso no renovable a escala humana, y que un manejo inadecuado de nuestras actividades, asi como de las propiedades del suelo, pueden conducir la degradacion del mismo. La degradacion del suelo se ve reflejada en la calidad del mismo. Por eso, la mitigacion de los efectos negativos causados por la degradacion, deberia ser un requisito primordial a la hora de planear cualquier actividad humana. En este libro se intenta describir la importancia que tiene el suelo para los ambientes rurales y urbanos, asi como definir la contaminacion quimica. Asimismo, se pretende plantear alternativas de mitigacion a la contaminacion del suelo, realizando el monitoreo de su calidad mediante la cuantificacion de la actividad biologica total."

The first Pan-American Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (PCSMGE) was held in Mexico in 1959. Sixty years after the first conference, the 2019 edition returns to Mexico.
