NATIONAL BESTSELLER • NATIONAL BOOK AWARD FINALIST • An "extraordinary ... profoundly moving" history (The New York Times Book Review) of the American Civil War that reveals the ways that death on such a scale changed not only individual lives but the life of the nation. An estiated 750,000 soldiers lost their lives in the American Civil War. An equivalent proportion of today's population would be seven and a half million. In This Republic of Suffering, Drew Gilpin Faust describes how the survivors managed on a practical level and how a deeply religious culture struggled to reconcile the unprecedented carnage with its belief in a benevolent God. Throughout, the voices of soldiers and their families, of statesmen, generals, preachers, poets, surgeons, nurses, northerners and southerners come together to give us a vivid understanding of the Civil War's most fundamental and widely shared reality. With a new introduction by the author, and a new foreword by Mike Mullen, 17th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

As the most significant theologian of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in the 17th century, the life and work of Johann Gerhard are known throughout the Western Church. Whether through writing weighty works such as his "Loci Theologici" or devotional books such as his "Daily Exercise of Piety," Gerhard's significance as a theologian has endured across the centuries.Johann Gerhard's concern as a theologian was, above all, pastoral, and this concern is reflected in his numerous devotional books and sermon collections. Gerhard's "An Explanation of the History of the Suffering and Death of our Lord Jesus Christ" leads the reader through the prototypes and prophesies of the Old Testament pointing forward to Christ's suffering and death. The work is divided into two introductory sermons and five 'acts' (I. In the Garden, II. At the Home of Caiaphas, III. Before Pilate, IV. Christ's Crucifixion, and V. Christ's Burial) for a total of 24 sermons. However, readers will find that this books is far from "just another book of sermons"-Gerhard's profound depth of knowledge of Holy Scripture and his ability to draw together the Old Testament prototypes with their fulfillment in Christ combine to make this work a true blessing.

Does God Want Me Dead written by D. Scott Bowling and has been published by WestBow Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-11-30 with Religion categories.

This book is a result of the spiritual lessons I have learned upon being diagnosed with a slow, progressive, and terminal illness. Once I was told I had a life expectancy of less than five years, biblical truths that seemed to be hidden to me prior to my diagnosis now seemed to pour off of every page. I was an avid Bible student and teacher prior to my diagnosis, but following my dire prognosis, I began to have a greater appreciation for the pain, suffering, and death of so many of the men and women that share their stories within the cover of our Holy Bible. The title of this book, Does God Want Me Dead, came first. The title is not intended to be sacrilegious, but other phrases seem to come woefully short of the question pressing upon my heart. Slowly, over three years, each additional chapter would germinate in my mind and heart and develop over varying time periods. My goal is always to handle Gods Word accurately and honestly. I know I will stand before God in a relatively short period of time to answer for each word I have uttered and written. My objective is to disseminate the truths that I have learned, first to my family and friends that will be most affected by my departure, and then to all the saints of God willing to invest a few hours of their time for their edification and sanctification. May Gods glory be high and lifted up in all things.
