This scholarly book is a holistically research and review of the negative and positive impact of human suffering. The author pulls from his multi-faceted experiences as a health-care professional; chaplain, pastor, and life-long disciple of Jesus of Nazareth, offering timely and very useful information that reveal to the reader the intrinsic complexity of our human nature and our response to suffering. Dr. Thornton received his doctorate in ministry from Luther Rice University/Seminary, studying the impact of abuse upon the soul of the individual; and providing useful solutions to the problems of domestic violence to individuals and church communities. Inspired by the inward and outward nobility of family members; friends, coworkers, and patients that he served, whom all displayed great courage and dignity during acute and long-termed crises, our author penned Suffering With Dignity as a living document of encouragement, strength, and hope for any person who will encounter life's trials and tribulations. As much as we pride ourselves in being in control, as well as expressing our individuality, this therapeutic book encourages the reader to reconsider that each of us control very little and that we essentially share more similarities than differences. The author equates suffering as one of life's common denominators that every human-being will have to deal with, and that human sufferance is sandwiched between birth and death. While each of our births and deaths are predetermined events, the major goal of this book is to educate the reader, effective wisdom and practical knowledge, assisting them in their healthy response to suffering throughout of lives. The thesis of this work is drawn from the author's Judaic-Christian worldview concerning the nature of sin and the spiritual laws associated with the provided curative measures by the Creator of every living soul. Dr. Thornton wrote this book to highlight perhaps of one of the most difficult spiritual discipl

This book is intended for everyone, but in particular for caregivers who are in the front line of the problem regarding the end of life and euthanasia. By presenting a critical analysis of the debate from a multidisciplinary perspective, the aim of this work is to provide a positive message about the therapeutic relationship at the end of life. Far from presenting an impenetrable tome or encyclopedia on the subject, our goal was to provide food for thought with sufficient information presented in what we hope to be a sober, thoughtful, and pedagogical manner. Thus, we have chosen not to discuss numerous very interesting questions that would have been beyond our goals. You will not find anything in the following pages about the etymology or history of the term 'euthanasia', or about the religious point of view, medical codes of ethics, opinions of national ethics committees, or even about the laws of countries where euthanasia was legalized before being outlawed (Australia), or is being seriously considered, sometimes in a bill that is already before parliament. In these pages, we are hoping to achieve a multidisciplinary book which will be regarded as a synthesis, offering a serene and positive vision of the end of life. The book is divided into three parts: the first, written by various physicians and a nurse, describes the different medical approaches to the 'end of life' now in existence, as well as possible treatments against pain and suffering. The second part, written by lawyers, provides a critical analysis of existing legislation in the only countries/states that have legalized euthanasia or assisted suicide: the State of Oregon in the USA, The Netherlands, and Belgium. The third and final part is a philosophical reflection on the dignity of the 'end of life' and places euthanasia in its anthropological, ethical, and sociopolitical context.

Excerpt from Christian Suffering, Its Dignity and Its Efficacy: Sermon, Occasioned by the Death of the Hon. Ambrose Spencer, and Preached in St. Peter's Church, Albany, on Sunday, March 19, 1848 Conflicts, no more fearful strivings, no more seeing through a glass darkly! The righteous hath hope in his death. Instead of shrinking from the grave, in horror and despair, we can go to it with tranquil assurance to carry our precious Christian dust, or to seek a resting place for our own mortal flesh. We look, not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. Christ hath died; yea, is risen again. Because He lives, we, His members, shall live also; and we can say, with an Apostle, 0, Death! Where is thy sting! O, Grave! Where is thy victory! Thanks be to God which giveth us the victory, through our Lord Jesus Christ! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
