Excerpt from Suggestive Outline Bible Studies and Bible Readings The work of the present volume was undertaken by the editor in response to the earnestly expressed desire of many with whom he has had sweet fellowship in the truth, who wished to have access to many of the readings in his posses sion. Furthermore, the desire seemed to be general for a book which should take in a larger scope of truth than a former volume of similar character, touching at least on all of the principal points that should be used in testimony for the Master. The careful topical arrangement and analytical index, which are features of this work, will commend the book to Bible students, and will, we trust, meet a long and widely felt want. If it results in a fuller and deeper study of those precious portions of the Word which are too often neglected, it will have met the purpose and desire of the one who has been greatly blessed and instructed in its collection and arrangement. Thanks are due for the special favors so kindly and readily granted by many honored teachers of the Word of God, to whom we are indebted for the larger part of the valuable matter which appears in these pages. Excerpt from Studies in the Life of Christ: A Year's Course of Twenty-Five Lessons, Providing a Daily Scheme for Personal Study Adapted Also to Class Work A course of Bible study adapted to the needs of the young people and those wishing to cooperate with them must necessarily be very flexible in character; but all are equally concerned in the question of Bible study for personal spiritual growth. Realizing, then, that some will desire to enter upon a more extensive study than others, considerable work has been assigned which may, from its very nature, be increased or diminished according to the ability and desire of the student. The work of the fourth and fifth days can be extended almost indefinitely, and yet the beginner will find many things of interest which are well within his reach. The topics and questions of the fifth and sixth days will be especially helpful in class work, as the various members can bring in their independent findings and can verify in class the doubtful points. It is suggested that in personal study and in class work homemade maps shall be used. It requires neither experience nor the ability of an artist to draw good maps and charts. The Outline Map of Palestine for Map-drawing and Distance (Map K, on page 12) is divided into squares of twenty miles on a side, the horizontal rows or columns of squares being designated by figures in the margin of the map from top to bottom, and the perpendicular columns by letters from left to right. The map is thus seen to cover an area of 200 miles north and south by 120 east and west If one wishes to make a map of the whole or of a part of Palestine he has merely to note what squares on Map K cover the given area, and then to lay out on paper or cloth and mark lightly with pencil the same number of squares, but on a scale fitted to the size of the map to be drawn. Excerpt from How to Study and Teach the Bible The Sunday School Publishing Board of the National Baptist Convention, U. S. A., is sending forth this book as the official teacher training manual for Negro Baptist Sunday Schools of America, and we consider ourselves fortunate to be able to secure the services of Dr. S. N. Vass as author - a Sunday school expert and a Bible scholar. Dr. Vass has had more than a quarter of a century's experience in Sunday school and Bible work. This book is the first one written by Dr. Vass bearing on this work, and shows the secret of his wonderful grasp upon the Bible. If there were no other features to the book but the Bible instruction, it would richly repay the price at which we are selling the book. Excerpt from The Seventy's Course in Theology: First Year; Outline History of the Seventy and a Survey of the Books of Holy Scripture In the past, a too exclusive adherence to merely text methods of work has been followed. That is to say, there has been a selection of separate and disconnected texts marshalled together in support of a given subject without sufficient care being taken to know the context and historical association of the scriptural utterances, often attended with great danger of forming misconceptions of such texts, resulting in wrong deductions and conclusions. The present aim is to make our Seventies familiar with the spirit of the scriptures, learning something of the indi vidual books, as a whole, something of their general import and their relationship one to another; that from this general acquaintance with the whole volume of scripture, the Seventies may become more competent to use separate passages more intelligently and effectively, and with less likelihood of making mistakes. The fear has been expressed that since so many lessons are devoted to the Bible, nearly half the years' course, there will be some danger of the work becoming monotonous; but that fear is based upon the com mon misconception that the Bible is one book, instead of a collection of books, thirty-nine in the Old Testament and twenty-seven in the New of our common English Bibles. Since the books are so many and the time period covered so great - about 2500 years, from Moses to St. John and the books being composed by many writers-there is promise of plenty of variety, both as to books and subject matter. It is the rapid survey of a whole library of books that is contemplated, rather than the study of one book, albeit the many books are bound together in one volume. The consideration of the American volume of scripture, the Book of Mormon, and of modern revelation in the Doctrine and Covenants and Pearl of Great Price, in the latter part of the course, together with the suggested lectures and the special lessons on present day subjects, scripture reading exercises, etc., etc., will unquestionably give ample va riety to the year's work. Excerpt from Outlines for the Study of Biblical History and Literature As the title of the volume indicates, it contains merely outlines which direct the student in the systematic study of the Bible itself and in the discriminating use 'oi the best reference literature. The topics are so arranged that one or more phases of the work may be omitted without breaking the continuity of the course. For example, those desiring a scientific grasp of the history will give their chief attention to the sections dealing with the sources. Others, whose main interest lies in the books of the Bible and their contents, will emphasize especially the sections which treat of the literature of each period. No pains have been spared to make the outlines definite enough to become a help ful guide to the student who does his work without further direction, and yet elastic enough to give free play to the experienced teacher. The difficulty of this combination need not be emphasized; the authors fully realize that their work will be Open to criticism because it fails to meet fully either ideal. Our promises: 1. Our goal is to bring you high quality Christian publications at reasonable and affordable prices. Therefore all of our works are complete and unabridged unless specifically stated otherwise, which means that unlike some other independent publications you get what you see and pay for. No unplesant surprises. 2. We endeavour to bring you updated editions of classic works. Therefore this work is not a scan, but is a completely digitized version of the original. 3. Unlike, many other independently published works, our publications are easy to read. Therefore you won't find illegible, faded, poor quality photocopies here. Neither will you find poorly done OCR versions of those faded scans either, with illegible "words" that contain all kinds of strange characters like , %, &, etc. Our publications have all been looked over and corrected by the human eye. 4. We can't promise perfection, but we're sure gonna try! What This Work Is A consecutive, systematic course of studies in our Lord's life and teachings, divided into 140 lessons, each complete in itself, and adapted either for individual or class use. The Author Dr. Torrey has had years of experience that particularly fit him to write such a work. A graduate of Yale University and Yale Theological Seminary, he also spent some time in study in Germany. Then followed a ministry of more than twenty years as a pastor. He was selected by D. L. Moody to be superintendent of The Moody Bible Institute of Chicago in 1889. Since then he has continuously taught the Bible at the Institute, at Bible conferences, etc. His world-wide experience, in later years especially, as evangelist and Bible teacher have also shown him how to help and instruct young converts and other students of the Bible. His helpful books on the Bible and other themes are well known. The Method The method is workable, and is calculated to develop the student's own gifts, and that in direct work upon the Bible text itself. It is not too laborious in quantity or manner for the every-day Christian. It is the method of modern science; first a discovery of the facts, and then a classification of the teachings. The facts are discovered by questions and answers. Dr. Torrey asks the questions, the student--each for himself or herself--answers the questions from the open Bible. Dr. Torrey gives a classification of the teachings, but each student should carry the discovery and classification further for himself. Results No subject of Bible study is more vital, fruitful or popular than the life and teachings of our Lord. Obviously, every young convert ought immediately to get well acquainted with His person and work, while every Christian is exhorted to grow in the grace and knowledge of Him. As a suggestive commentary on the Four Gospels, it has special value, bringing together the teachings of Christ on a given subject, also awakening in the student a desire for personal Scripture research. Constant use is made of parallel passages and pertinent reference to other parts of the Bible. Other Advantageous Features Personal applications are made from time to time, thus feeding the student's soul and developing him in Christian experience and work. The teacher and Christian worker will find the lessons full of side studies, suggestions and outlines for Bible readings and addresses. For the brief notation of such additional matter the wide margins throughout this book will be found convenient and probably sufficient. Outfit No outfit is required beyond this volume and a copy of the English Bible. It will be seen that occasional references are made to the Revised Version, so that the student is advised to use a copy for reference.
