This book relates the personal stories of 18 mothers who have lost adult children to accident, suicide, murder, and major illness. The stories trace the similarities and the levels of grief and bereavement over a time frame of from four months to thirty-five years. The mothers range from 30 to 85 years of age. The lost children were from 16 through 45 years of age. From the responses to a common list of questions asked of over 75 survivor mothers, stories were selected and transcribed. The questions focused on changes in the grief and bereavement process over time. The stories serve as a framework for a review of prevailing theories of grief and bereavement. The book was initiated for a variety of reasons: to offer a sense of camaraderie and hope to other bereaved parents, to re-frame the losses as continuing relationships, to provide tools of understanding to professionals and friends who work with bereaved parents, and to memorialize the lost children.

Death of an Elephant is an allegory of existence. Pran Dubey, a professor failed by avowed social institutions, is a conflicted man torn apart by his strife and Diaspora neurosis in the ambiguities of past and present, tradition and modernity, and life and death. Human incompleteness and lifes absurditieshope and despair trapped in the paradox of pain and pleasureare dramatized through an Eastern soul with a Western mind and a pen dipped in the ink of reflecti ve reality. Death of an Elephant is a harbinger of the neo existential genre. Brij Mohan entices the curiosity of his book with the piquant title, Death of an Elephant....[It] is really boundless in scope and meaning and of having significance for all who read it....Mohan plumbs the lives of his characters beyond the academic dimensions. They are human beings caught in the web of life and who struggle to extricate themselves with honor from their problems. - Joseph V. Ricapito I only exist, but I want to live...I was back where I began: A basterdized Shangri-La in search of a lost identi ty...You can run away from your past but the past will never run away from you.... The man in gray flannel suit has disappeared from our comity.... I wasnt born an American; I became one. I love history.... I love truth even more.... Academia, by and large, looks like a gigantic machine designed to commoditize education for unprincipled success.

Examines what literature reveals about human attitudes towards elephants and who shows compassion towards them Elephants are in dire straits – again. They were virtually extirpated from much of Africa by European hunters in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, but their numbers resurged for a while in the heyday of late-colonial conservation efforts in the twentieth. Now, according to one estimate, an elephant is being killed every fifteen minutes. This is at the same time that the reasons for being especially compassionate and protective towards elephants are now so well-known that they have become almost a cliché: their high intelligence, rich emotional lives including a capacity for mourning, caring matriarchal societal structures, that strangely charismatic grace. Saving elephants is one of the iconic conservation struggles of our time. As a society we must aspire to understand how and why people develop compassion – or fail to do so – and what stories we tell ourselves about animals that reveal the relationship between ourselves and animals. This book is the first study to probe the primary features, and possible effects, of some major literary genres as they pertain to elephants south of the Zambezi over three centuries: indigenous forms, early European travelogues, hunting accounts, novels, game ranger memoirs, scientists’ accounts, and poems. It examines what these literatures imply about the various and diverse attitudes towards elephants, about who shows compassion towards them, in what ways and why. It is the story of a developing contestation between death and compassion, between those who kill and those who love and protect. Death and Compassion is the first study to probe various literary genres. It examines what these literatures imply about human attitudes towards elephants and who shows compassion towards them. Intended for the general reader, this masterful compilation probes the psychology of suicide, revealing the latest research and spotlighting global efforts to reduce the million suicide deaths each year. Exceeding previously available studies in both scope and depth, the two-volume Suicide: A Global Issue explores and explains both why suicides—and suicide attempts—occur and what can be done to prevent them. The first volume, Understanding, considers factors that may play into the choice to take one's life, discussing forces as varied as culture, psychology, religion, and biology. The second volume, Prevention, covers steps that can be taken to prevent suicide, whether individually or by society as a whole. Articles by widely respected experts consider questions such as why people kill themselves, why some countries have extremely high suicide rates, and whether the treatment of suicidal individuals actually prevents them from taking their lives. Each chapter presents incidents, research, and actions from nations around the globe, as well as from the United States.
