Vincent has spent his entire life being shuffled from one foster home to the next. His grades suck. Making friends? Out of the question thanks to his nervous breakdowns and unpredictable moods. Still, Vince thought when Maggie Atkins took him in, he might've finally found a place to get his life-and his issues-in order. When Maggie dies, it all falls apart. A year ago, Vince watched a girl leap to her death off a bridge. He's starting to think she had the right idea. Through a pro-suicide forum, Vince meets others with the same debate regarding death: cancer-ridden Casper would rather off herself than slowly waste away, and there's quiet, withdrawn Adam, whose mother wouldn't notice if he fell off the face of the planet. As they gravitate toward each other, Vince searches for a reason to live while coping without Maggie, coming to terms with Casper's imminent death, and falling in love with a boy who doesn't plan on sticking around.

Suicide is one of the most personal yet one of the most complex acts anyone can perform and it continues to be a major global public health problem with an estimated 800,000 deaths annually. Suicide prevention is an important target in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2030, which aims to reduce premature mortality from noncommunicable diseases by one-third. Suicide is a global problem, but what differences are there is the challenges faced and the solutions found regionally? Written by leading experts, the nine chapters of this volume provide a clear outline of the major milestones and achievements that have been reached so far in six different geographical regions according to data collated by IASP and the WHO. Recent progress in the development and implementation of national suicide prevention programs in different countries is also explored. In two concluding chapters, the evidence base and best practice of suicide prevention programs are reviewed as well as a look at the future directions for suicide prevention at the global level. This is essential reading for all those involved in suicide research and prevention as well as public health policy and epidemiology who want to keep up-to-date with the latest global developments.

Rethinking Suicide written by Craig J. Bryan and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-10-04 with Psychology categories.

An examination of how suicide prevention efforts largely fail due to the mistaken assumption that greater mental health awareness is the key to saving lives. Over the last two decades, the US suicide rate has steadily grown despite extensive awareness campaigns, wide implementation of suicide prevention programs and initiatives, and increased mental health advocacy. To the confusion and frustration of researchers, healthcare providers, and many others, these efforts have largely failed to reverse the trend. Why do suicide rates continue to climb despite our best efforts? Why aren't we better at this? What are we doing wrong? Rethinking Suicide is a critical examination of what we think we know about suicide, with particular focus on the assumed role of mental illness. Craig J. Bryan, a leading expert on suicide prevention, argues that most prevention efforts have failed because they disproportionately emphasize mental health-focused solutions such as access to treatment and crisis services. Instead of classifying suicide as a mental health issue, careful analysis of research findings suggest it should instead be seen as a highly complex problem with many risk factors - from personal decision-making styles, to the availability of lethal means, to financial uncertainty. As such suicide rates will not be curtailed by conventional solution-oriented thinking; rather, we need process-based thinking that may, in some cases, defy or contradict many of our long-held assumptions about suicide. Rethinking Suicide interweaves the author's firsthand experiences with explanations of scientific findings to reveal the limitations of widely-used practices and to introduce new perspectives that may trigger a paradigm shift in how we understand and prevent suicide.

Keep up-to-date with recent research and practice in suicide. This book is based on the TRIPLE i in Suicidology international conferences, which are organised annually by the Slovene Centre for Suicide Research in memory of the late Prof. Andrej Marušič with the aim of promoting intuition, imagination, and innovation in the research and prevention of suicide and suicidal behaviour. The carefully selected chapters provide food for thought to practitioners, researchers, students, and all those who come into contact with the tragedy of suicide, with the hope of stimulating new ideas and interventions in the difficult fight against suicidal behaviours. In four parts, the internationally renowned team of authors summarise the achievements of suicidology so far (both in quantitative and qualitative research), present effective interventions in suicide prevention (including for youths and older people) and knowledge gained in bereavement and postvention studies (such as in different cultures and those bereaved by suicide), and highlight future directions for suicide research and prevention. The volume is thus a useful resource for all those interested in keeping up-to-date with recent research and practice in suicide.
