English summary: Am I free? Isn't this the most basic question that a human being can ask himself? For each individual's answer depends on the way in which he lives and thinks. However, Spinoza points out a major risk: accepting the illusion of freedom. The worst prejudice - the most dangerous error - is to believe that one is free when one is not. To be truly free, Spinoza tells us, one must, above all else, free oneself from the illusion of freedom. There is no paradox here, but rather a requirement of thought: true freedom can only be found between determinism and free will. If freedom is a basic reality of human nature, it is also a permanent necessity. Am I free? First, there is individual freedom: how can one live with one's desires without becoming enslaved to them, yet also without renouncing them? Second, political freedom: how can one live in society with one's personality, yet remain in harmony with others? French description: Pourquoi Spinoza ?

Poetry has always been in my being from my earliest memory. Even as a young child, I would climb into the highest branches and sway with the wind, suspended between the immense potential of a star-filled heaven and the banal motion of a finite earth below. Even then, my soul would sing in an unknown language, glorifying the majestic presence connected in every living thing. The first time a written poem inspired that part of me was a rhyme titled “Little Drops of Water” from a book collection read to me by my mother. I knew then my true calling in this life.

The author of more than 2,000 books and pamphlets, Voltaire (François-Marie Arouet, 1694-1778) was one of the most prolific writers of the eighteenth century, and also one of the wittiest and most insightful. This unique collection of over 800 of Voltaire’s wisest passages and choicest bons mots runs the gamut on topics from adultery to Zoroaster, in both English and French. Drawing from a wide range of his publications, private letters, and remarks recorded by his contemporaries, The Quotable Voltaire includes material never before gathered in a single volume. English translations appear alongside the original French, and each quote is thoroughly indexed and referenced, with page numbers for both the first known publication edition of each entry and the most recent edition of Voltaire’s works. The book also features over 400 quotes about Voltaire, including commentary by eighteenth-century luminaries like Samuel Johnson, Catherine the Great, Casanova, and John Adams, as well as an eclectic assortment of modern-day personages ranging from Winston Churchill and Jorge Luis Borges to Mae West and Mike Tyson. Lavishly illustrated with nearly three dozen images of Voltaire-related art, this collection opens with a scholarly essay that recounts the great man’s life and reflects on his outsized influence on Western culture. Whether you are a Voltaire scholar or a neophyte, The Quotable Voltaire is the perfect introduction to a brilliant mind.
