Que signifie, pour un poème, le fait d'avoir un sujet? Dans quelle mesure la tâche du poète est-elle déterminée par l'existence plus ou moins préalable d'une «matière» plus ou moins désignable? Dans quelle mesure les multiples versions de celle-ci (référent particulier, notion générale, thème répertorié, fable racontée, chose représentée) se laissent-elles unir sous une «idée» cohérente de l'invention poétique? Sujet caduc, noble sujet observe la manière dont ces questions se posent à divers poètes de la Renaissance. De Pétrarque à Ronsard, le problème du «sujet de poésie» offre un point de vue sur l'évolution d'un art qui se sent différent des autres, mais parvient mal à décider en quoi. Entre l'incessant tumulte des occasions d'écrire, le souci de trouver un sujet qui «convienne», et le désir de penser «la poésie en général», la hiérarchie des matières possibles est le lieu d'un conflit endémique, dont l'enjeu touche à la place de l'art poétique lui-même dans un ordre du discours que domine la rhétorique de l'éloge. L'attitude des poètes vis-à-vis des «arguments» qu'ils se veulent «libres» de choisir ne cesse ainsi de se déplacer. C'est par excellence le cas de l'amour, à la fois consacré, toléré, récusé comme «principal sujet» de la poésie; mais chaque sujet concevable, et le concept même de sujet, se trouvent pris dans ce débat.

Advertising the Self in Renaissance France explores how authors and readers are represented in printed editions of three major literary figures: Jean Lemaire de Belges, Clément Marot, and François Rabelais. Print culture is marked by an anxiety of reception that became much more pronounced with increasingly anonymous and unpredictable readerships in the sixteenth century. To allay this anxiety, authors, as well as editors and printers, turned to self-fashioning in order to sell not only their books but also particular ways of reading. They advertised correct modes of reading as transformative experiences offered by selfless authors that would help the actual reader attain the image of the ideal reader held up by the text and paratext. Thus, authorial personae were constructed around the self-fashioning offered to readers, creating an interdependent relationship that anticipated modern advertising. This book presents an interpretation of Maurice Scève’s lyric sequence Délie, object de plus haulte vertu (Lyon, 1544) in literary relation to the Vita nuova, Commedia, and other works of Dante Alighieri. Dante’s subtle influence on Scève is elucidated in depth for the first time, augmenting the allusions in Délie to the Canzoniere of Petrarch (Francesco Petrarca). Scève’s sequence of dense, epigrammatic dizains is considered to be an early example, prior to the Pléiade poets, of French Renaissance imitation of Petrarch’s vernacular poetry, in a time when imitatio was an established literary practice, signifying the poet’s participation in a tradition. While the Canzoniere is an important source for Scève’s Délie, both works are part of a poetic lineage that includes Occitan troubadours, Guinizzelli, Cavalcanti, and Dante. The book situates Dante as a relevant predecessor and source for Scève, and examines anew the Petrarchan label for Délie. Compelling poetic affinities emerge between Dante and Scève that do not correlate with Petrarch.

Descartes's Fictions traces common movements in early modern philosophy and literary method. Emma Gilby reassesses the significance of Descartes's writing by bringing his philosophical output into contact with the literary treatises, exempla, and debates of his age. She argues that humanist theorizing about poetics represents a vital intellectual context for Descartes's work. She offers readings of the controversies to which this poetic theory gives rise, with particular reference to the genre of tragicomedy, questions of verisimilitude or plausibility, and the figures of Guez de Balzac and Pierre Corneille. Drawing on what Descartes says about, and to, his many contemporaries and correspondents embedded in the early modern republic of letters, this volume shows that poetics provides a repository of themes and images to which he returns repeatedly: fortune, method, error, providence, passion, and imagination, for instance. Like the poets and theorists of his age, Descartes is also drawn to the forms of attention that people may bring to his work. This interest finds expression in the mature Cartesian metaphysics of the Meditations, as well as, later, in the moral philosophy of his correspondence with Elisabeth of Bohemia or the Passions of the Soul. This volume thus bridges the gap between Cartesian criticism and late-humanist literary culture in France.
