Quando il senso dato alla parola monarchia fosse stato sempre il medesimo o quando la forma assunta dalle monarchie nel6 /corso de' tempi crvili fosse stata sempre la me desima, non vi sarebbe luogo a dubitare di a ver colta 'la mente di Dante nell'interpreta zione di cotesto famoso libro.ma il senso della parola e la forma data ai governi monarchici essendo stati ambedue soggetti a molte varieta e modificaz1on1, mi sembra ingiusto l' attribui re a Dante i pensieri che si ponno aver oggi} sulle monarchie de' nostri tempi;]e stimo bene che a meglio intendere la mente di Dante nel libro de Monarchia, si debba guardare non solo al senso che gli si dava comunemente...a' suoi tempi, ma allo stretto significato che voleva gli si desse l'autore medesimo. Perocche Dante intese a dargli un significato educa forma num va, forma che non gli avevano data a parer suo che i Romani ai tempi della repubblica con chiusa dall'impero d'augusto; forma che dopo la caduta del paganesimo poteva assumere un grado piu elevato di civilta col-mezzodella religione di Custo e quindi sarebbe. Stata no vissima anche m faccia al suo modello, cioe a quella dell'impero romano.
