Excerpt from Sulphur as a Factor in Soil Fertility: A Dissertation Although sulphur was recognized as an essential element in plant nutrition as early as the middle Of the nineteenth century, the use of sulphur and sulphur compounds as fertilizers has never become general. Analyses for sulphur in soils have generally been low, yet when compared with the sulphur in the ash of plants, the amount present in the soil seemed sufficient for all the needs Of the crop. The use of gypsum as a fertilizer, however, was quite exten sive for a time, following the discovery Of its beneficial effect on plants. Browne (13) credits this discovery to a clergyman in Germany in 1768. From there it spread to France and Great Britain, and was brought to the United States by benjamin franklin, who used it on his farm near Philadelphia. For a time gypsum was extensively used as a fertilizer both in Europe and the United States and gave remarkable results. Griffiths (25) reports experiments by schubert in Germany, and crocker (is) refers to the experiments Of Judge peters, john binns, and edmund ruffin in the United States. All these men Obtained remarkable results with gypsum on legumes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Sulphur (S) plays a pivotal role in various plant growth and development processes being a constituent of sulphur-containing amino acids, cysteine and methionine, and other metabolites viz., glutathione and phytochelatins, co-factor of enzymes which contribute to stress repair and amelioration of heavy metal toxicity. Besides, a number of S-containing components are biologically active and, thus, a source for use as medicinal value. The basic global issue before the agricultural scientist and world community is to evolve cultivars and develop methodologies for efficient use of inputs to enhance agricultural productivity. This is particularly true of the developing countries which are going to see maximum rise in population with changing food demands and declining availability of land. Amongst the inputs, nutrients play a crucial role. The major requirement is for N, P and K followed by several micro-nutrients. In this context reports of world-wide S deficiency in the agricultural systems are relevant. The reasons are many. Broadly speaking reduction inS emission, use of S-free N, P and K fertilizers and higher biomass production contributed the maximum. Despite the need for sulphur as an essential plant nutrient and the substantial returns expected from its use, very little attention has been given to fill the gap between supply and demand of S.

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2016 in the subject Geography / Earth Science - Geology, Mineralogy, Soil Science, grade: 9.0, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (Agriculture College and Research Institute, Madurai), course: Soil Science & Agricultural Chemistry, language: English, abstract: The study has been contemplated to evaluate the sources and levels of sulphur for maximizing the productivity of blackgram in Madurai district, Tamil Nadu in the following objectives: To delineate sulphur status of soils of pulses growing areas in Madurai district, to study the release pattern of different sulphur sources through laboratory incubation, to study the adsorption and desorption behavior of sulphur in various soil types and to evaluate the effect of different sources of sulphur on yield, nutrient uptake and quality of blackgram. Pulses are the second most important group of crops after cereals. India is producing 14.76 million tons of pulses from an area of 23.63 million hectare, which is one of the largest pulses producing countries in the world. India accounts for 33 per cent of the world area and 22 per cent of the world production of pulses.Despite India being the largest producer (18.5 million tons) and processor of pulses in the world also imports around 3.5 million tons annually on an average to meet its ever increasing consumption needs of around 22.0 million tons. According to Indian Institute of Pulses Research’s Vision document, India’s population is expected to touch 1.68 billion by 2030 and the pulse requirement for the year 2030 is projected at 32 million tons with anticipated required annual growth rate of 4.2 per cent. However, about 2-3 million tons of pulses are imported annually to meet the domestic consumption requirement.
