Mayasari-Hoffert examines the depiction of the Left in Indonesian literature since the anti-leftist purge in 1965. With close textual analysis of Indonesian literary texts and their political context, this book investigates how the New Order regime under Suharto was able to build a metanarrative of liberation while purging the Left in Indonesia. Even after the regime’s end in 1998, many Indonesians still have an ingrained fear of the prospect of Communism, with the result being that literary representation of the Left is still seen as problematic. Salah satu fenomena penulisan karya sastra di Indonesia sejak beberapa dekade terakhir adalah semakin intensifnya kecenderungan untuk mengangkat budaya daerah, yang antara lain berupa pengangkatan seni budaya wayang. Buku ini merupakan hasil suntingan dari penelitian disertasi yang diperluas dengan ditambah karya fiksi yang dijadikan sumber data. Penelitian ini menemukan 18 macam transformasi unsur cerita wayang ke dalam karya fiksi Indonesia yang terdapat dalam unsur plot, tokoh, latar, masalah pokok dan tema, serta nilai-nilai, di samping juga membicarakan sikap dan niatan pengarang mentransformasikan cerita wayang itu ke dalam karyanya. Penulisan ini atau lebih tepatnya pemilihan topik penulisan ini, sengaja dilakukan untuk menunjukkan betapa dunia kesenian tradisionil, terutama dan khususnya seni budaya wayang, dapat dijadikan sumber penulisan sastra Indonesia modern yang cukup kaya dan bervariasi, serta dapat ditampilkan dalam berbagai bentuk transformasinya. Cerita dan tokoh wayang, nilai-nilai dan filsafat wayang, bagaimanapun, masih dapat dijadikan sebagai salah satu referensi kultural dalam berpikir, berasa, bersikap, dan bertingkah laku, serta mendapat tempat dalam kehidupan modern dewasa ini walau kesemuanya haruslah dengan embel-embel ”kontekstual”. Sastra wayang yang tradisional ternyata dapat dipadukan dan dihidupkan dalam bentuk sastra modern.
