Pertentangan antara kaum agamawan dan Darwinian seolah tak bisa didamaikan. Keduanya bagai musuh bebuyutan. Menurut kaum agamawan, teori evolusi Charles Darwin yang mengatakan bahwa manusia merupakan “tahap akhir” dari evolusi primata, wajib ditolak karena bertentangan dengan wahyu Tuhan. Sementara, menurut kaum Darwinian, teori evolusi diturunkan bukan dari abstraksi, melainkan hasil dari observasi ilmiah yang direkonstruksi menurut metode saintifik yang mapan, sehingga tak bisa dibatalkan, bahkan oleh wahyu sekalipun. Akibatnya, lahirlah ekses yang kontra produktif, seperti kebijakan pelarangan pengajaran teori evolusi di sekolah-sekolah negeri oleh Mahkamah Agung Amerika Serikat pada tahun 1968, atau gerakan perlawanan terhadap teori evolusi Seventh-day dan Pantecostalism. Atas dasar itulah, Francisco J. Ayala, seorang filsuf cum biolog, menulis buku ini. Dengan ringkas dan sederhana, buku ini menyatakan bahwa sains dan keyakinan keagamaan tidak harus bertentangan. Jika sains dan agama dipahami secara tepat, maka keduanya tidak mungkin bertentangan, karena terkait dengan masalah yang berbeda. Sains lebih berkaitan dengan proses-proses penjelasan tentang alam semesta, seperti bagaimana planet-planet bergerak, kompoisisi materi dan atmosfernya, atau asal mula dan fungsi organisme. Sedangkan agama lebih berkaitan dengan makna dan tujuan dari dunia serta kehidupan manusia, seperti hubungan yang sesungguhnya antara manusia dengan Sang Pencipta dan sesamanya, serta nilai-nilai moral yang mengatur kehidupan masyarakat.
