«Il volume cataloga per la prima volta gli incunaboli della Biblioteca del Seminario Vescovile di Padova. La raccolta, come ha rivelato la ricerca di Piero Scapecchi (Biblioteca Nazionale di Firenze) è attualmente composta da 454 edizioni possedute per 483 esemplari, due stampati in pergamena e i restanti cartacei. Di questi volumi 70 sono decorati con miniature di penna o di pennello mentre circa 60 recano illustrazioni xilografate. Due esemplari sono invece xilominiati. La gran parte degli esemplari più preziosi è risultata, grazie alle ricerche fatte sulle note di possesso, sulle legature e sulle segnature, provenire dalla collezione del conte Alfonso Alvarotti che, acquistata dal Seminario Vescovile nel 1720, costituì il primo nucleo importante della biblioteca. Vi sono, sebbene in numero di molto inferiore, anche esemplari miniati e xilografati che provennero al Seminario in seguito alle soppressioni napoleoniche e del Regno d'Italia. Di tutti gli incunaboli è stata eseguita una schedatura, secondo i criteri moderni, apponendo una nuova segnatura e la scheda, nel caso degli incunaboli miniati, è stata corredata da una descrizione completa delle miniature con analisi stilistica e proposta di attribuzione. Lilian Armstrong (Wellesley College Mass). si è occupata in un saggio degli esemplari xilominiati mentre Federica Toniolo ha esaminato quelli corredati da miniature di pennello. Per quanto riguarda più specificamente la storia della miniatura l'esame della collezione ha reso note nuove opere di alcuni dei più importanti miniatori del Rinascimento veneto in particolare del Maestro dei Putti, del Maestro del Plinio di Pico, del Maestro dell'Ovidio di Rimini, di Girolamo da Cremona, di Antonio Maria da Villafora e Benedetto Bordon. Sono inoltre emerse opere di miniatori lombardi, il Maestro delle Ore Birago, e fiorentini, ad esempio, Boccardino il Vecchio, autore delle miniature di un esemplare dell'Edizione delle Opere di Omero stampata a Firenze nel 1488. Più in generale la collezione ha reso evidente l'importanza di alcune botteghe di miniatori, a Padova, a Venezia ed anche a Verona, che si dedicarono ampliamente all'illustrazione degli incunaboli che negli ultimi tre decenni del XV secolo vennero stampati in gran numero in particolare nelle tipografie veneziane. E' anche possibile notare come molte delle tipologie illustrative riprendano usi già attestati nei manoscritti miniati. Ciò ad esempio è visibile nella frequente presenza della decorazione a bianchi girari, nelle lettere fogliacee in 'stile Roverella' ed anche nell'utilizzo del frontespizio architettonico e di elementi ornamentali all'antica di cui proprio la scuola veneto padovana aveva dato già alla metà del secolo prove di alto livello nei manoscritti. Il volume è edito nella collana Fonti e Ricerche di Storia Ecclesiastica padovana, XXXIII. E' corredato da 55 tavole a colori e 134 figure in bianco e nero realizzate da Michele Barollo e Simone Citon tecnici del Dipartimento di Storia delle Arti Visive e della Musica.»--
