The Rumor in told from multiple perspectives, with each chapter named for the character whose view we would see or the community as a greater whole. The novel follows four primary plot lines: 1. Madeline King's efforts to produce a new novel. Originally, Madeline has no idea what to write about, but in time she decides to write the story of her best friend Grace's affair. 2. Grace Pancik's passionate, extramarital affair with her gardener, Benton Coe, serves as the secondary plot line. 3. The third plot line focuses on Madeline and Grace's children: Allegra, Brick, and Hope. Allegra and Hope are twin sisters that appear to have little in common, apart from their shared affections for Brick. Allegra is dating Brick, but is also cheating on him with an older boy named Ian. 4. The final plot line centers aroundEddie Pancik, Grace's husband, and the desperate state of his financial affairs. Suite For Barbara Loden written by Nathalie Léger and has been published by New York Review of Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-10-17 with Fiction categories.

The second in Nathalie Léger’s acclaimed genre-defying triptych of books about the struggles and obsessions of women artists. “I believe there is a miracle in Wanda,” wrote Marguerite Duras of the only film American actress Barbara Loden ever wrote and directed. “Usually, there is a distance between representation and text, subject and action. Here that distance is completely eradicated.” It is perhaps this “miracle”—the seeming collapse of fiction and fact—that has made Wanda (1970) a cult classic, and a fascination of artists from Isabelle Huppert to Rachel Kushner to Kate Zambreno. For acclaimed French writer Nathalie Léger, the mysteries of Wanda launched an obsessive quest across continents, into archives, and through mining towns of Pennsylvania, all to get closer to the film and its maker. Suite for Barbara Loden is the magnificent result.

It's the night of the Yellow Puff-Ball Mushroom Cloud and a mysterious yellow fog is making its way across America, sowing chaos in its path. Mt. Fuji has erupted. The Euphrates has run dry. The White House is under attack by giant bears, the President is missing, and the Vice President has turned into a Bichon Frisé. It's Apocalypse Time, my friends. Soon the Beast will rise. And six unlikely women will make the perilous journey to the Pit of Nethalem, where they will stop the Beast from fulfilling his evil purpose, or die trying. The Book of Dog is a satire of startling originality: a tale of politics, religion, demon possession, motherhood, love, betrayal, and easygoing bestiality. A ridiculously plausible story set in a near-future America, it wryly explores how even the most insignificant and powerless of people, when working together, can change the world for the better.

Hollywood Highbrow written by Shyon Baumann and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-06-05 with Performing Arts categories.

Today's moviegoers and critics generally consider some Hollywood products--even some blockbusters--to be legitimate works of art. But during the first half century of motion pictures very few Americans would have thought to call an American movie "art." Up through the 1950s, American movies were regarded as a form of popular, even lower-class, entertainment. By the 1960s and 1970s, however, viewers were regularly judging Hollywood films by artistic criteria previously applied only to high art forms. In Hollywood Highbrow, Shyon Baumann for the first time tells how social and cultural forces radically changed the public's perceptions of American movies just as those forces were radically changing the movies themselves. The development in the United States of an appreciation of film as an art was, Baumann shows, the product of large changes in Hollywood and American society as a whole. With the postwar rise of television, American movie audiences shrank dramatically and Hollywood responded by appealing to richer and more educated viewers. Around the same time, European ideas about the director as artist, an easing of censorship, and the development of art-house cinemas, film festivals, and the academic field of film studies encouraged the idea that some American movies--and not just European ones--deserved to be considered art.
