The Earth's population, currently 7.2 billion, is expected to rise at a rapid rate over the next 40 years. Current projections state that the Earth will need to support 9.6 billion people by the year 2050, a figure that climbs to nearly 11 billion by the year 2100. At the same time, most people envision a future Earth with a greater average standard of living than we currently have - and, as a result, greater consumption of our planetary resources. How do we prepare our planet for a future population of 10 billion? How can this population growth be achieved in a manner that is sustainable from an economic, social, and environmental perspective? Can Earth's and Society's Systems Meet the Needs of 10 Billion People? is the summary of a multi-disciplinary workshop convened by the National Academies in October 2013 to explore how to increase the world's population to 10 billion in a sustainable way while simultaneously increasing the well-being and standard of living for that population. We began our work in right and in serious earnest in the year 2005, November 14th, 2005 to be precise when children’s day is celebrated all over India in commemoration of the birthday of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India. The underlying philosophy of our work however, stretches back to the early 1990’s, even the mid 1980’s, when we faced a great deal of cognitive dissonance in many of our endeavours and daily walks of life due to a constant exposure to, and a bombardment by, a large number of philosophies and ideas from different sources, both human and non-human. In the year 2005, particularly after the aforesaid date, we had reached out to several leading lights and luminaries in the fields of science, religion, philosophy and spirituality with a great deal of hope, to meaningfully engage with them and elicit their own pet theories, proposals and viewpoints on various issues and topics. We had hoped that this would also help us in our own voyage and journey of discovery. The results were indeed startling; there was a wide variation in viewpoints based on the scholar in question’s own religious, linguistic and nationalistic affiliation, and loyalties. Therefore, the age of ideology has still not formally or conceptually ended; ending this can change many fundamental equations at a grassroots level, and can make life better for all of us living in different parts of the world. As a matter of fact, Eurocentric biases in various fields of the social sciences has only served to throw up counter-reactions, and exacerbate ideological differences. Intellectualism is also still weak in general, particularly in developing countries, particularly owing to the following factors..........................

The common belief that endless economic growth, as measured by Gross Domestic Product, is not only possible but actually essential for the flourishing of civilization remains a powerful policy goal and aspiration for many. In The Mismeasure of Progress, Stephen J. Macekura exposes a historical road not taken, illuminating the stories of the activists, intellectuals, and other leaders who long argued that GDP growth was not all it was cracked up to be. Beginning with the rise of the growth paradigm in the 1940s and 1950s and continuing through the present day, The Mismeasure of Progress is the first book on the myriad thinkers who argued against growth and the conventional way progress had been measured and defined. For growth critics, questioning the meaning and measurement of growth was a necessary first step to creating a more just, equal, and sustainable world. These critics argued that focusing on growth alone would not resolve social, political, and environmental problems, and they put forth alternate methods for defining and measuring human progress. ?In today’s global political scene—marked by vast inequalities of power and wealth and made even more fraught by a global climate emergency—the ideas presented by these earlier critics of growth resonate more loudly than ever. Economic growth appealed to many political leaders because it allowed them to avoid addressing political trade-offs and class conflict.
