Irena Koprowska's autobiography chronicles the life and struggles of an immigrant woman who successfully pursued a career while raising a family. In the process, she became an award-winning physician, professor, and research pioneer at a time in history when it was believed a woman's place was in the home. Born in Warsaw in 1917, Irena Koprowska was married, pregnant, and a physician by the age of twenty-two. Forced to flee the Nazis, first in Poland and then in France, she fled to Brazil in 1940. Four years later she immigrated to the United States. Unable to speak English, she started her academic career as a volunteer at the Department of Pathology at Cornell University Medical College. During the years of her subsequent Research Fellowships at Cornell University Medical College, she worked with George N. Papanicolaou, inventor of the Pap smear. The two co-authored a case report of the earliest diagnosis of lung cancer by a sputum smear. Eight years later, she was appointed Assistant Professor of Pathology at State University of New York Downstate Medical College and went on to become the first woman physician to become a full professor at Hahnemann Medical College and Hospital (now known as Hahnemann University) in Philadelphia. Later she joined the faculty of Temple University Medical School where, upon her retirement in 1987, she became Professor Emerita. She was recognized as "Woman Physician of the Year" by a Gold Medicus award of the Polish American Society in 1977 and received the Papanicolaou Award of the American Society of Cytology in 1985.

Diary and guest book that was kept at a summer home on a Maine island in the vicinity of Bar Harbor and the surrounding islands of Acadia National Park. The entries are anonymously written by the owner or renter who is from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Recorded in the volume are the seasonal opening and closing of a summer home on an unnamed island beginning in 1916 and ending in 1935. The first entries for each year are usually in July with the last entry written in September. Autographs and lists of people who stayed and dined at the home have been recorded, including the autographs of Leopold Stokowski, Mildred (Yarnall) Garrison, Frank W. Garrison, and Leopold Seyffert. Short entries include the coming and goings of families vacationing on surrounding islands whose names are signed or mentioned in the diary. In some cases there are entries by house guests. They include the Yarnall family, the Gibbon family, and the Pepper family. Numerous entries include the islands that were encountered by sailboat or canoe. Places of note include Bartlett Island, Black Island, Hardwood Island, Sutton Island, and Blue Hill. Walking on trails, picnicking, and the weather are also written in the journal.

Maine's more than 3,000 miles of rocky coastline, picturesque islands, sandy beaches, iconic lighthouses, and quintessential New England harbors have lured visitors since the middle of the 19th century. Steamships first transported sportsmen and "rusticators" along the coast. Soon summer colonies formed, and art schools flourished. Yachts became common sights along the coast and cruising grew in popularity. With the 20th century came the automobile and the development of the highway system, including Route 1, which encouraged road trips.
