The Finnish Civil War 1918 offers a rich account of the history and memory of the short conflict between socialist Reds and non-socialist Whites in the winter and spring of 1918. It also traces the legacy of the bloody war in Finnish society until today. Laajaan arkistomateriaaliin perustuva teos sotaretkistä, joiden tarkoitus oli suomensukuisten heimojen asuinalueiden irrottaminen Neuvosto-Venäjästä. Heimosotien tarkoituksena oli yksinkertaisesti liittää Karjala Suomeen ja "Suomen heimo" yhteen. Joissakin suunnitelmissa haaveiltiin jopa Kuolan niemimaan saamisesta osaksi Suomea. Suurista suunnitelmista huolimatta kyse oli varsin vaatimattomista yrityksistä: sanan varsinaisessa mielessä ne eivät olleet sotia, eikä Suomen valtio ollut niiden osapuolena. Retket olivat vapaaehtoisten tekemiä aseellisia sissi-iskuja, ja niillä oli vain armeijan moraalinen tuki ja aseapu. Monesti aseetkin jouduttiin hankkimaan suojeluskuntien kautta, eikä läheskään kaikilla vapaaehtoisilla ollut sotakokemusta tai edes asekoulutusta. Lisäksi useat retkeläiset olivat alaikäisiä. Ei siis ihme, että nämä heimosodiksi kutsutut retket epäonnistuivat. Ensimmäisen maailmansodan ja Venäjän vallankumouksen kaaos houkuttelivat uskomaan menestykseen ja arvioimaan vihollisen voimat todellista paljon vähäisemmiksi.
