Lets assume that science, through genetic and social engineering, will allow us to live a hundred or more years in reasonably good health, but with the burden of minor chronic disease. If life goes on for that long, however, will nature, God, or some faction of ourselves, bolster death to restore balance to the world? Will the super-elderly want to live that long? Because of the potential burdens, will only the elites enjoy the opportunity to super-ageand if so, will democracy and freedom suffer? Will the population weaken physically, mentally, and spiritually as it ages? Will the young, pushed out by a flood of geezers, revolt? We cant help but view our existence through the many frameworks of life and death, regardless of whether we call them aging, science, naturalism, religion, spiritualism, or super-naturalism. Where does human life begin and end? At the level of the gene, the cell, the individual human, or societyor the unknown? If we super-ageas it appears we willwhat will happen to the balances we strike?

The Big 100 written by William J. Kole and has been published by Diversion Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-10-03 with Social Science categories.

Journalist William J. Kole, reluctant but newly minted member of AARP, explores the looming era of super-aging—incredibly longer lifespans overall, and eight times more centenarians by the year 2050—through the lens of past, present, and future life at ages 50, 65, 80, and on to 100-plus. What happens to all of us when 65 is merely a life half-lived? By 2050, the world’s centenarian population—those aged 100 or more—will increase eightfold. Half of today’s 5-year-olds can expect to reach the same heights. It’s going to upend everything we thought we knew about health care, personal finance, retirement, politics, and more. Whether we’re 18 or 81, this tectonic demographic shift will affect us all. The Big 100 confronts readers with both the brightness and potential bleakness of a fate few of us thought possible. Journalist William Kole guides us on this journey into our future, an optimistic but sometimes fraught exploration of super-aging as the grandson of a centenarian. Along the way, there are expert sources, like Dr. Jane Goodall, longevity expert Dr. Thomas Perls, Senator Elizabeth Warren, and even 101-year-old influencer and fashionista Iris Apfel; along with surprises, including the truth about those so-called “Blue Zones” everyone thinks are centenarian factories. (Spoiler alert: They’re not.) And there’s the troubling truth that those reaching extreme longevity tend to be overwhelmingly white, a product of what experts deem the “weathering theory”: the idea that the health of African Americans begins to deteriorate in early adulthood as a physical consequence of socio-economic disadvantages. How long can we live? How long should we live? And what happens when 65 is merely a life half-lived? The Big 100 explores the most pressing questions of our super-aging future, and offers a glimpse of a reality that awaits us, our children, and our grandchildren.

Being Young In Super Aging Japan written by Patrick Heinrich and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-05-15 with Social Science categories.

Japan is not only the oldest society in the world today, but also the oldest society to have ever existed. This aging trend, however, presents many challenges to contemporary Japan, as it permeates all areas of life, from the economy and welfare to social cohesion and population decline. Nobody is more affected by these changes than the young generation. This book studies Japanese youth in the aging society in detail. It analyses formative events and cultural reactions. Themes include employment, parenthood, sexuality, but also art, literature and language, thus demonstrating how the younger generation can provide insights into the future of Japanese society more generally. This book argues that the prolonged crisis resulted in a commonly shared destabilization of thoughts and attitudes and that this has shaped a new generation that is unlike any other in post-war Japan. Presenting an inter-disciplinary approach to the study of the aging trend and what it implies for young Japanese, this book will be useful to students and scholars of Japanese culture and society, as well cultural anthropology and demography.

The Super Age written by Bradley Schurman and has been published by HarperCollins this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-01-18 with Social Science categories.

A demographic futurist explains the coming Super Age—when there will be more people older than sixty-five than those under the age of eighteen—and explores what it could mean for our collective future. Societies all over the world are getting older, the result of the fact that we are living longer and having fewer children. At some point in the near future, much of the developed world will have at least twenty percent of their national populations over the age of sixty-five. Bradley Schurman calls this the Super Age. Today, Italy, Japan, and Germany have already reached the Super Age, and another ten countries will have gone over the tipping point in 2021. Thirty-five countries will be part of this club by the end of the decade. This seismic shift in the world population can portend a period of tremendous growth—or leave swaths of us behind. Schurman explains how changing demographics will affect government and business and touch all of our lives. Fewer people working and paying income taxes, due to outdated employment and retirement practices, could mean less money feeding popular programs such as Social Security and Medicare—with greater numbers relying on them. The forced retirement or redundancy of older workers could impact business by creating a shortage of workers, which would likely drive wages up and result in inflation. Corporations, too, must rethink marketing strategies—older consumers are already purchasing the majority of new cars, and they are a growing and vitally important market for health technologies and housing. Architects and designers must re-create homes and communities that are more inclusive of people of all ages and abilities. If we aren’t prepared for the changes to come, Schurman warns, we face economic stagnation, increased isolation of at-risk populations, and accelerated decline of rural communities. Instead, we can plan now to harness the benefits of the Super Age: extended and healthier lives, more generational cooperation at work and home, and new markets and products to explore. The choice is ours to make.

Aging Society And Ict written by T. Obi and has been published by IOS Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-09-12 with Political Science categories.

It is predicted that by 2050, 22% of the world's population will be over 60 years of age. This rapid shift in demographics calls for the development of coherent and forward-looking policies to address the many challenges which will inevitably arise as a result. This book presents 33 articles from the workshop jointly organized by APEC and OECD held in Waseda University, Tokyo, Japan, in September 2012. At this workshop, a group of international experts described a wide range of important issues associated with an aging population, and discussed how both governments and the private sector can best mobilize innovation and research to transform this global challenge into an opportunity for active and productive aging and new sources of sustainable growth. The authors call for a comprehensive approach to achieve policy coherence, as well as for strengthening public-private partnerships and promoting collaboration among multiple stakeholders and systems. The book is divided into six chapters, covering such subjects as lessons learnt from best practice, solutions for the aging society, policy initiatives, health innovation, smart communities and new services. Innovation will be necessary to meet the challenges and to mitigate the health, social and economic impacts of an aging population worldwide, as well as unlocking the potential of ICTs through increased research and new models. This book will be of interest to all those whose work involves the development of new services for older people in sectors such as health and nursing care, education and training, transportation, community development and smart cities, among others.
