Eleanor, a young astronomer in a small observatory in outback Australia, witnesses a nearby star going supernova. Seeking confirmation of her observation, she contacts the renowned Professor Penrose of the Mount Wilson Observatory in California. Despite being skeptical at first, he soon realizes that the supernova has set off a shockwave of radiation and high energy particles, which will strike the Earth in a matter of hours. He quickly warns the President, who, along with his Vice President Lynda and other foreign governments, take whatever precautions they can. After the shockwave has passed and the recovery phase begins, it becomes clear that the danger is still not over, as the death toll continues to rise unexplainably. A frantic race against time begins, as Edinburgh-based Sandra and other researchers worldwide try to uncover the mysterious cause of the deaths, and to find a cure, before it is too late. But what happens if they can’t? Supernova is the debut novel by Dee Amos which sets up a fascinating “what if?” scenario by combining a fast-paced disaster-based story with strong female characters and some of today’s hottest social, political and environmental issues.

The Moon written by Oliver Morton and has been published by Profile Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-05-16 with Science categories.

A Sunday Times must read book of 2019 'An out-of-this-world read ... brilliant and compelling. Morton is a high-octane British science journalist, and every chapter is littered with material that strikes, amazes or haunts ... this is a book filled not just with a lifetime's knowledge of its subject but with a lifetime's suppressed excitement.' James McConnachie, Sunday Times Every generation has looked up from the Earth and wondered at the beauty of the Moon. 50 years ago, a few Americans became the first to do the reverse - with the whole world watching through their eyes. In this short but wide-ranging book, Oliver Morton explores the history and future of humankind's relationship with the Moon. A counterpoint in the sky, it has shaped our understanding of the Earth from Galileo to Apollo. Its gentle light has spoken of love and loneliness; its battered surface of death and the cosmic. For some, it is a future on which humankind has turned its back. For others, an adventure yet to begin. Advanced technologies, new ambitions and old dreams mean that men, women and robots now seem certain to return to the Moon. What will they learn there about the universe, the Earth-and themselves? And, this time, will they stay?

Supernova written by C.A. Higgins and has been published by Del Rey this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-07-26 with Fiction categories.

C. A. Higgins’s acclaimed novel Lightless fused suspenseful storytelling, high-caliber scientific speculation, and richly developed characters into a stunning science fiction epic. Now the dazzling Supernova heightens the thrills and deepens the haunting exploration of technology and humanity—and the consequences that await when the two intersect. Once Ananke was an experimental military spacecraft. But a rogue computer virus transformed it—her—into something much more: a fully sentient artificial intelligence, with all the power of a god—and all the unstable emotions of a teenager. Althea, the ship’s engineer and the last living human aboard, nearly gave her life to save Ananke from dangerous saboteurs, forging a bond as powerful as that between mother and daughter. Now she devotes herself completely to Ananke’s care. But teaching a thinking, feeling machine—perhaps the most dangerous force in the galaxy—to be human proves a monumental challenge. When Ananke decides to seek out Matthew Gale, the terrorist she regards as her father, Althea learns that some bonds are stronger than mortal minds can understand—or control. Drawn back toward Earth by the quest, Althea and Ananke will find themselves in the thick of a violent revolution led by Matthew’s sister, the charismatic leader Constance, who will stop at nothing to bring down a tyrannical surveillance state. As the currents of past decisions and present desires come into stark collision, a new and fiery future is about to be born. Praise for Supernova “An enjoyable, hard science fiction adventure.”—Cinelinx “Higgins succeeds in expanding her universe and leaving the reader hungry to learn how her debut trilogy will end.”—New York Daily News “Riveting and thought-provoking.”—Publishers Weekly Praise for C. A. Higgins’s Lightless “Gripping . . . sci-fi with a hint of thriller.”—New York Daily News “[A] measured, lovely science-fiction debut [that is] more psychological thriller . . . contained, disciplined, tense . . . The plot is compulsive. . . . Lightless is the first of a planned series, and you can’t help looking forward to learning what’s next.”—The New York Times “The stakes in this story are high—life and death, rebellion and betrayal. . . . Higgins continually ratchets up the tension. . . . This is a debut not to be missed.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred review) “A taut, suspenseful read.”—Tech Times “Absolutely brilliant . . . science fiction as it is meant to be done.”—New York Times bestselling author Seanan McGuire

Uris, the Princess Regent of Ur, whose mother died at her birth, rules for her father who has gone to map the new neutron star Draco. Returning from a hunt, she is summoned to the ruling world of the known galaxies on Regis Xinor. It is past the time that her father can ever return into Standard Xinor time, and she must declare him as lost. Assuming the Queen-ship of Ur, she is thrust into a political struggle arising from an atomic explosion in hyperspace that has destroyed an Ambassadorial Shuttle of the powerful Pandamon Empire, ruled by a ruthless megalomaniac, who would become God Emperor. The source of this explosion is found to be the plutonium garbage of a remote planet that orbits a star known as Sol. The planet is known as Terra, and it is soon to be very near, when the supernova remnants of the explosion of Draco have cleared. A new navigational portal will then open unexplored parts of a new galaxy to the Xinor Empire. Fleeing the megalomaniac Metastophiles, Uris, and Kurege, who has fled Pandamon to escape being imprisoned because of his genetic tendency for prescience, traverse the unsettled neutron star Draco, and emerge in the Cancer Nebula, crashing on Earth, in Louisiana. Wealthy industrialist, Stark Raven, saves Uris's life, and thus begins an unraveling of an intrigue of political subterfuge that has existed on Earth for centuries, and in modern times, involves the United States Nuclear Assembly Plant, Pantex, in Amarillo, Texas, the precious wells around Amarillo that produce the isotope helium III that is vital in the cryogenics of the anti gravity coils that make intergalactic travel possible, the old XIT property, and the gathering of a proto-fetal fluid used in making life extension shots taken by Metastophiles. At the climax, it is bone knives vs ray guns, at the end of time, for the fate of mankind.
