In 1938 Action Comics #1 introduced the world to Superman. In a matter of years, the skies of our imaginations were filled with mutants, aliens and vigilantes. Batman, Wonder Woman and the X-Men - in less than a century they've gone from not existing at all to being everywhere we look. But why? For Grant Morrison, possibly the greatest of contemporary superhero storytellers, these heroes are not simply characters but powerful archetypes whose ongoing story arcs reflect and predict the lives we live. In this exhilarating book, Morrison draws on history, art, mythology, and his own astonishing journey to provide the first true chronicle of the superhero.

Ever wondered what a superhero eats for breakfast? Do they need a special diet to feed their superpowers? The odd metabolisms of superheroes must mean they have strange dietary needs, from the high calorie diets to fuel flaming bodies and super speeds, to not so obvious requirements for vitamins and minerals. The Secret Science of Superheroes looks at the underpinning chemistry, physics and biology needed for their superpowers. Individual chapters look at synthesising elements on demand, genetic evolution and what superhero suits could be made of. By exploring these topics, the book introduces a wide range of scientific concepts, from protein chemistry to particle physics for a general scientifically interested audience. With contributions from leading science communicators the book hopes to answer some of these important questions rather than debunk or pick holes in the science of superheroes.

Seminar paper from the year 2016 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: 2,0, RWTH Aachen University, language: English, abstract: This paper analyses the deconstruction of the superhero and its stereotypical features in "Watchmen". The paper assumes that the deconstruction serves as a way to show the dispensability of superheroes. The papers' thesis is therefore that the superheroes in "Watchmen" and their stereotypical features are dispensable and that a life without them is definitely possible and even desirable. In order to prove this thesis, the paper first presents a definition for stereotypical superheroes. Then, with the help of the definition, it analyses a few of the protagonists of "Watchmen" and their features with respect to their differences to other superheroes and their dispensability. In the conclusion, the results of the analysis will be summarized and a final statement about the dispensability of the superheroes and their superhero features is given.
