This timely book is a diverse collection of essays by nationally recognized scholars, politicians, and lawyers that challenges the popular myth that the U.S. Supreme Court is an apolitical institution. It analyzes the manner in which the U.S. Supreme Court superintends the electoral process through its judicial decision-making. As a provocative study of the intersection between law and politics, it considers whether the nation's highest court, as an inherently undemocratic and counter-majoritarian political institution, should enter the so-called political thicket and decide legal disputes concerning political corruption, campaign finance, political parties, patronage, and redistricting. Because there are few books on the U.S. Supreme Court and its impact on American electoral politics, Superintending Democracy is a welcome addition to social science and legal scholarship. It is a book for political scientists, legal scholars, and students who are interested in learning about American politics, constitutional law, or the political nexus between law and courts.

The resolution of the 2000 presidential election by the U.S. Supreme Court's Bush v. Gore decision generated an extraordinary outpouring of literature in a very short period of time. Now that the initial furor over the decision has subsided, The Final Arbiter presents a sober consideration of the consequences of the decision for the law, the presidency, and the legitimacy of the American political system. The contributors include well-established names in law and political science, as well as up-and-coming scholars, offering a broad understanding of Bush v. Gore's long-term impact. This book will be useful as a classroom text in both survey courses on elections and the courts and for advanced courses that consider the impact of judicial rulings on the government and political process.

Southern Africa has embarked on one of the world's most ambitious security co-operation initiatives, seeking to roll out the principles of the United Nations at regional levels. This book examines the triangular relationship between democratisation, the character of democracy and its deficits, and national security practices and perceptions of eleven southern African states. It explores what impact these processes and practices have had on the collaborative security project in the region. Based on national studies conducted by African academics and security practitioners over three years, it includes an examination of the way security is conceived and managed, as well as a comparative analysis of regional security co-operation in the developing world.

Democracy And Policing written by Trevor Jones and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1994 with History categories.

British policing is on the brink of the most radical reforms in at least 30 years. Policing has emerged from the shadows to the forefront of public debate during the 1980s and 1990s. The new-found interest reached a climax in the summer of 1993 with the publication of three major reports into policing within three weeks of each other. A central theme of the resulting public debate has concerned the relationship between democracy and policing. Proposed reforms to the structure and functioning of local police authorities have met with a chorus of criticism from local authority associations, opposition politicians and not least, the police staff associations. The strongest theme running through these criticisms concerns the perceived threat to the 'democratic accountability' of the police service. Since 1990, PSI has been engaged in research on the relationship between democratic institutions and policing. The study examines the idea of democracy in relation to modern policing. Focusing on specific changes in the style, organisation, and operation of policing over the last 10 years this book describes and analyses how the various actors interacted to produce these changes. The book provides detailed evidence about the input by police authorities and other local bodies into the development of policing policy. It focuses on three areas: the growth of crime prevention, new policing responses to crime against women and children, and the increasing use of civilian staff within the police service.

How American Politics Works written by Richard J. Gelm and has been published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-03-26 with Law categories.

American politics is criticized and belittled by media critics and the public, yet the system is held out as a model for the world. The paradox of this simultaneous cynicism and adulation is rooted in the conflict between the human motives that drive politics. Crisply and clearly written with numerous historical examples, How American Politics Works explains the complex and sometimes confusing American political system in a vibrant and accessible light. Documented with recent and historical scholarship presented clearly in laymen’s terms, How American Politics Works explores the multiple dimensions of politics and the source of Americans’ disillusionment with their government through the “four Ps”: Philosophy, Pragmatism, Personality and Profit. Philosophical and moral principles underpin the key political institutions in America, but values are challenged in the quest to achieve workable political solutions. Policy is rarely made to conform to lofty principles alone. It often results from short-term incremental compromise, driven by people in pursuit of the public good and their own personal self-interest and profit. How American Politics Works explains the inner workings of the American political system, including the power of ideas, political compromise, powerful personalities and the preeminent position of money. While Americans’ high ideals are often illusive in the rough and tumble of political battles, and the public’s trust is bruised with every political scandal, balancing idealism and individual virtue with ambition and self-interest is the dynamic and safeguard of American politics. How American Politics Works offers a comprehensive presentation of the realities, challenges and possibilities of the American political system to bring an understanding, fascination and dedication to the wider public.
