The title of this book, Supermadre, is ironic. It means, not that women have begun to exercise real power in Latin American political life, but that their participation is mostly confined to roles that are extensions of their roles as mothers—health, education, welfare, for example—and then only on the lower levels of policy-making. Elsa Chaney begins her study with an examination of various attempts to explain women's virtual absence from decision-making councils not only in Latin America but also world-wide, concluding that their motherhood role has had the profoundest effect on the nature of their political activities. She then analyzes the images and realities of women in Latin American society from colonial times to the present. The remainder of the book is a detailed study of women in politics and government in Latin America, with emphasis on the contrasting cases of Peru and Chile. In conclusion, Chaney suggests that women will make only slow progress toward full participation in public life until they themselves stop seeing their role in politics as that of the supermadre.

Blaxploitation action narratives as well as politically radical films like Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song typically portrayed black women as trifling "bitches" compared to the supermacho black male heroes. But starting in 1973, the emergence of "baad bitches" and "sassy supermamas" reversed the trend as self-assured, empowered, and tough black women took the lead in the films Cleopatra Jones, Coffy, and Foxy Brown. Stephane Dunn unpacks the intersecting racial, sexual, and gender politics underlying the representations of racialized bodies, masculinities, and femininities in early 1970s black action films, with particular focus on the representation of black femininity. Recognizing a distinct moment in the history of African American representation in popular cinema, Dunn analyzes how it emerged from a radical political era influenced by the Black Power movement and feminism. Dunn also engages blaxploitation's legacy in contemporary hip-hop culture, as suggested by the music’s disturbing gender politics and the "baad bitch daughters" of Foxy Brown and Cleopatra Jones, rappers Foxy Brown and Lil' Kim.

O livro "Ainda são Supermadres"? uma análise sobre a produção e a participação das deputadas da ALERJ de 2015 a 2020 tem como objetivo apresentar, a pesquisadores, alunos, acadêmicos, leitores interessados em política, os temas e as preferências das parlamentares, no âmbito das políticas públicas, apresentados durante os anos de 2015 a 2020 (11a e 12a legislaturas), discutindo o conceito de Supermadres, criado por Elsa Chaney (1979) e debatido por Bayer (2006), que traz a mudança de prioridades da política das legisladoras na América Latina, neste caso, demonstrando que elas legislam não só sobre "questões femininas" – educação e saúde –, mas também sobre "questões masculinas" – emprego, economia e agricultura. Mas esse comportamento ocorre ou não na ALERJ? Existe alguma correlação entre o tema do projeto e o gênero do(a) parlamentar? Há alguma correlação direta entre a formação e a ideologia partidária na produção legislativa dessas deputadas? Qual a posição ocupada internamente (na ALERJ) por essas parlamentares em Comissões e na Mesa Diretora? São posições de destaque ou não? As deputadas, com apenas um mandato, conseguem ter o mesmo prestígio que as deputadas mais antigas, ou a senioridade importa? Esses são alguns dos questionamentos levantados neste trabalho que compila 897 projetos de leis em tramitação e leis em vigor, de autoria e coautoria das deputadas, durante cinco anos nos temas de igualdade de direitos de mulheres, crianças e questões familiares, segurança pública, economia e tributos, agricultura, saúde, educação e trabalho e emprego. Os trabalhos de algumas Comissões Parlamentares de Inquérito, entre elas, a CPI do Feminicídio e demais Comissões Permanentes com temas correlacionados à pesquisa também foram consideradas, sendo cruciais para esta análise inédita.
