Après avoir étudié, dans une admirable série d'ouvrages, notre art religieux depuis le XIIe siècle, Émile Mâle aborde ici les premiers monuments chrétiens construits sur notre sol. Le centre de son étude est la basilique. Il recherche les plus anciens vestiges du christianisme en Gaule, c'est-à-dire les souvenirs visibles remontant jusqu'aux siècles des persécutions. Le paganisme disparaissant, les églises s'installent sur les lieux mêmes des anciens temples. L'auteur montre d'abord les influences qui orientent leur construction. Sans négliger naturellement l'apport romain, il insiste surtout sur les conséquences des pèlerinages à Jérusalem, dont les itinéraires passent par Carthage, l'Égypte, l'Asie Mineure. Ainsi, pénètrent peu à peu, en Gaule, les leçons du monde oriental. Qu'ont donné au total ces multiples influences ? Un art vraiment nouveau, d'abord sur le plan architectural, puis dans le domaine ornemental. Le chapitre sur la décoration de l'église — mosaïque, fresques, tentures, lustres, etc. — est un des plus neufs. Mais il ne faut pas séparer la basilique de ce qui l'entourait et en faisait essentiellement partie : le baptistère et la nécropole, avec ses beaux sarcophages sculptés. Fidèle à sa méthode de découvrir le sens profond des signes visibles, dont parle Saint Paul, Émile Mâle nous explique le sens symbolique des monuments funéraires. Un tel livre dépasse le plan de l'érudition pure. Il est l'œuvre d'un grand écrivain, attentif à rendre accessibles les plus récentes découvertes archéologiques. Pour lui, nos vieilles églises sont une matière vivante, la traduction imagée des aspirations, des croyances de tout un peuple. Elles se rattachent à la vie mystique et sociale du Moyen Âge.
