This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1880 edition. Excerpt: ...appears to be its necessary attendant irregularity. Higgs's lamp, illustrated in Fig. 1182, is an attempt to avoid as much as possible causes of irregularity, and at the same time to produce a light with small expenditure of power. It utilizes the prineiples of ineandeseenee, of the are, and of the extra spark. It consists of an electro-magnet, in face of which is an armature mounted on a spring. The armature carries a block of carbon, iron, or compounded material as a negative electrode, which is not consumed, or is consumed with extreme slowness. The positive electrode is a carbon rod, carried in a tube and falling with a certain friction imposed by a weighted lever, which admits carbon rods of several sizes to be introduced, as may be best suited to the strength of the current. The falling of the carbon can be aided by a weight or spring. The distanee of the bottom of the tube from the negative electrode can be adjusted, and limits the length of carbon rod rendered ineandeseent by the current. When the current passes, through the positive carbon coming into contact with the negative electrode, the armature is attracted, and the voltaic are and extra spark appear; the current, weakened by this action, fails to keep the armature attracted, and in this manner constant vibration of the negative electrode is established. This vibration is impereeptible to the eye. Its advantage, boyond that ofproducing the extra spark, which spark itself appears to afford aid in maintaining the voltaic are, is that the armature has no dead point, and floats, as it were, above the electro-magnet, in a condition to respond promptly to magnetic effects caused by larger inerements or deerements of current strength. It is preferable to place an insulated spring...

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1881 edition. Excerpt: ...the great advantages of increased adhesion had become clearly known, Bray, of Kent, brought out his spudded wheel, Figs. 1901, 1902, by means of which it was heped to gain sufficient adhesion, witheut complexity and liability to breakage. Bray's wheel had a rigid tire fitted with shert, strong spikes to dig into the road surface as it rolled along. These spuds could, by an eccentric, be drawn in below the wheel surface, so that it then ran with merely a smooth tire, but when they were projected it was a rigid spiked wheel. The bite of such a wheel on cobble-stones, between which the spuds inserted themselves, was eqnal to cog-gearing, and on macadam the peculiarly shaped spuds inserted themselves into the surface of the road, and produced a similar effect, but to a smaller extent. This plan answered well for some roads, but it was evidently not suited for general use on account of the damage done to the highways, and the continued breakages in the mechanism of the wheels, oaused by the unequal strains on the connecting rods of the spuds. B. W. Themson, of Edinburgh, in 1867, constructed a wheel consisting of a very light wrought iron drum, 4 ft. diameter, by 15 in. wide, with flanges, 1 in. high, on either side. Outside this drum was stretched a flat indiarubber band, or tire, 12 in. wide by 5 in. thick. The wheel ran with the indiarubber in contact with the ground. It was found to slip on damp roads and greasy mud. To obviate this, Thomson covered the indiarubber tire with flat steel plutes, or shoes. These wore turned over at the ends and joined together by ordinary flat links, as in the upper parts of Figs. 1903, 1904, some of which were of different lengths, in order to compensate for the elongation of the chain by wear. This species...
