Nessuno vorrebbe sostenere che giovi o sia decente lanciare un'ipotesi per ciò solo che abbia qualche apparenza di vero, senza averla ben cimentata con quanto già sia stato razionalmente messo innanzi da altri intorno all' ai gomento ch' essa concerne, e non per altro che per tentar di assicurarsi una priorità problematica o per eccitare il pensiero altrui. Che se all'incontro ci diamo a cure insistenti intorno all' ipotesi razionale che sia pullulata nel nostro pensiero, ne deriva un' investigazione più o men larga e profonda, la quale, e' induca essa o no ad abbandonare la nostra conghiettura suole portarci a considerazioni e percezioni di varia maniera e assai volte del tutto impensate capaci tutte di una esposizione nitida feconda. Come è vero, secondo la persuasione ormai comune, che i fatti sogliano in sè contenere e per sè rivelare all' in dagine rigorosa le loro ragioni, o meglio la serie infinita di queste ragioni e che il sistema di codeste rivelazioni tra di loro combinate, costituisca la sintesi effettiva o quel tanto di sin tasi che è sempre là. Condizione transitoria dello schietto sapere cosi appunto è vero, che il lavoro nostro, anche se limitato a ristrettissimo campo, di continuo ci porti, quando è sanamente condotto, a addentrarci in molto estese e dilicate congruenze o attenenze, si che ne possa risultare cosa organica e viva. C' è poi nu' arte, ben diversa certammite da quella che si voleva di sposata alla filologia d'altri tempi ma un'arte pur vera, di cui si dee giovare la struttura esteriore dei nostri saggi qualunque ne sia la mole.
