There are numerous books documenting the challenges of student athletes and presenting recommendations for academic success. They primarily focus on understanding the issues of student-athletes and recommendations are oftentimes overly simplistic, failing to explicitly provide interventions that can be executed by student-athlete support personnel. In addition, the topic of supporting student-athletes who are academically at risk and/or are diagnosed with high incidence disabilities has been overlooked by scholars resulting in few publications specifically focusing on providing strategies to the staff/personnel who serve these populations. The general target audience is college/university practitioners who interface with student-athletes who demonstrate academic and social risk in the realm of athletics. These stakeholders include but are not limited to: academic support staff, student athletes, parents, coaches, faculty/educators, counselors, psychologists, higher education administrators, student affairs professionals, disability services coordinators/personnel, as well as researchers who focus on education leadership, sports, and special education. All of these groups are likely to find this book attractive especially as they work with student-athletes who are at-risk for academic failure. Also, it is ventured that this book will become the staple text for the National Association of Academic Advisors (N4A), the official organization for all personnel who work in collegiate academic support and can be used by members of intercollegiate athletic associations to reform policies in place to support at-risk student-athletes.

This study sought to examine student-athletes’ perceptions about how academic support programs affect their academic success in completion of their programs of study at SPORTS University. Many student-athletes face challenges regarding their time commitments and academic success. As student-athletes face more responsibilities, their personal and academic achievement can be affected. This study was guided by two research questions focusing on the resources that influence the academic success of student-athletes, academic support programs currently in place and the correlation between those programs and the academic success of student-athletes at SPORTS University. This research was completed through a mixed-methods, descriptive case study approach, where tools were provided to study a complex phenomenon, theory and interventions were developed based on research findings and results. The research was conducted virtually through a survey and virtual interviews and focused on interactions with student-athletes at SPORTS University. As holds true with case study methodology, the researcher used several data collection methods to ensure that rich data was collected and analyzed. The chosen sources of data collection for this study included structured interviews, surveys, and NCAA artifact review.

The current study explores how academic success is defined and socially constructed between athletic academic support professionals and at-risk student-athletes. There continues to be an increase in academic support services provided to student-athletes, including learning specialists, academic advisors, and academic buildings (Wolverton, 2008). Although a significant relationship between support services and academic output of student-athletes has been found (Hollis, 2002; Ridpath, 2010), the relational and communicative dynamics of these groups have not been fully explored. Using qualitative methods, one-on-one interviews were conducted with participants, and grounded theory and thematic analysis were employed to identify overarching themes for the research questions. Academic advisors identified academic achievement and personal development as academic success. Learning specialists identified academic success as maximizing individual potential. Student-athletes identified meeting grade-based standards and work ethic resulting in reaching personal goals as academic success for themselves. Student-athletes also perceived that their advisor would identify eligibility and effort as academic success, and that their learning specialist would view academic success as building academic skills and work ethic. In addition, overarching themes were found to explain how success is socially constructed among these groups. Academic advisors used communication and instrumental support, while learning specialists created accountability through problem solving and aided in socio-emotional development. Student-athletes identified that their advisor provided information and acted as a safety net, while their learning specialist facilitated academic success and helped them develop socio-emotionally. This study adds to research on the professional roles of learning specialists and advisors, explores at-risk student-athletes' experiences with academic support staff, and identifies how the communication and relational dynamics between these groups may be improved.

This mixed method study explored student athletes' perception of parental influence in their high school athletic endeavours and how this perceived influence affected their self efficacy and academic success. The quantitative data was derived from surveys that gauged student perceived parental involvement, self efficacy and academic success in two high schools in a large metropolitan school district in British Columbia. One of the schools was a school composed primarily of students of mid to high social economic status while the other was designated an inner-city school. The qualitative focus group consisted 10 athletes from each of the schools - a male and female from each grade - discussing students' feelings about perceived parental involvement and how it affected their self-efficacy and academic success. The findings showed that all of the student athletes - regardless of which school they attended - perceived that their parents were involved in their high school athletic careers. This perceived parental influence did not, however, substantially influence their self-efficacy or academic success. Student athletes did feel increased membership when part of a high school athletic team and the interactions with their peer group and positive role models is linked to engagement in school, stronger feelings of self-worth, and academic success. This study showed that perceived parental influence, while likely a positive support for students, had very little effect on the students' perception about themselves or their academic success.

College sports have a profoundly positive effect on the vast majority of student-athletes who go on to pursue careers in something other than sports but this phenomenon has not translated equitably to the Black Male Student Athlete. Between 2007 and 2010, Black men were only 2.8% of full-time, degree-seeking undergraduate students but comprised 57.1% of football teams and 64.3% of basketball teams; The NCAA's ongoing campaign to highlight the positive outcomes of participating in collegiate athletics has failed to address many of the underlying issues affecting Black male student-athletes. Specifically, there is perpetuation of the "myth that the road to success is paved with sports contracts, not diplomas." Black male student-athletes are often socialized to value sports over academics at a young age because athletic talent can mean access to a college education and improvement in the social and economic status of the athletes and their families. Once Black male student-athletes matriculate, colleges and universities often reify this educational disequilibrium by succumbing to the pressures of winning and by reaping substantial financial benefits at the expense of their academic success. This project emphasizes the responsibilities that athletic department staff (ADS) have to deconstruct how the lived experiences of Black male student-athletes can negatively impact their academic progress, identify how their perceptions and stereotypes of these students cause them to unconsciously objectify them, and encourage engagement in practice that shifts from a deficit model approach to one that recognizes their community cultural capital. They must question their practices to identify how they are unconsciously contributing to the disenfranchisement and marginalization of these students during their collegiate careers. ADS must recognize how their expectations are shaped by a prevailing negative social narrative about Black males and an industry that emphasizes revenue and entertainment value at the expense of the intellectual and social development of many student-athletes. Moreover, they must balance institutional pressure to win against the responsibility to provide culturally relevant support that allows Black male student-athletes to be more fully seen and included in all aspects of campus life.
