This study critically explores Muslim students' experiences on campus and in the community and identifies the opportunities, barriers, and constraints in students' academic and social relations with peers, university personnel and communities at large. The study provides practical recommendations grounded in evidence for university administrators, faculty, staff and other stakeholders in the areas of service delivery, policy, programs, and educational curriculum development and instruction. The study utilizes a constructivist grounded theory methodology informed by semi-structured interviews of 32 Muslim students in undergraduate and graduate programs as data collection methods. Ambient Islamophobia was uncovered as the central phenomenon. I use a group of theoretical categories, subdivided into properties and dimensions, to illustrate my theory. These theoretical categories are further regrouped into five themes, which illustrate: (1) the ambient and endemic nature of Islamophobia on campus and in the community; (2) the causal conditions of ambient Islamophobia and the processes by which Muslim students become aware and contextualize the complex and multilayered Eurocentric and Orientalist ideologies, beliefs, attitudes and behaviors that entrench Islamophobia; (3) the impacts/ consequences of ambient Islamophobia that affect Muslim students cognitively, affectively and behaviorally; (4) the coping and resistance strategies Muslim students develop to counter ambient Islamophobia and achieve social well-being, academic success; and (5) the longing for belonging, while confronting expectations held about Canada and studying at the university. Understanding the processes and foundations of ambient Islamophobia can be used by stakeholders to develop more inclusive policies, programs and classrooms to support the social and academic success of Muslim students on campus.

[Truncated] This study set out to develop understandings of issues involved for school counselling services in Australian Muslim schools for students in secondary levels of schooling. The objective of the study was to develop theory and principles of practice for a culturally appropriate counselling service for students in Australian Muslim schools. It was hypothesised that the needs of students and the delivery of counselling services for Muslim students are unique due to the largely migrant and nonhomogenous cultural and linguistic backgrounds of the Muslim community in Australia, as well as the role religion plays in living as a minority group in mainstream Australian society. A qualitative approach was adopted to gain in-depth and contextual understandings of this topic. The research was located within the Interpretivist paradigm in the form of a perspectival study. Appreciative Inquiry was chosen to structure and guide the semi-structured interview questions and its four-D process (Discovery, Dream, Design and Destiny) was used in the presentation of the research findings. Grounded theory strategies of purposeful sampling for participant recruitment, data collection and coding in data analysis were employed. The inquiry commenced with a pilot study which indicated a strong need to expand the scope of the study from counselling to wellbeing support due to the wider and deeper understanding of care in an Islamic context. A total of 56 participants were interviewed from three cities with the largest Muslim populations in Australia: Sydney, Melbourne and Perth. Fifteen of the participant-associated schools were independent Muslim schools while three schools were non-religious independent schools that implemented Islamic values in their school ethos and served a student body almost all of whom were Muslims. Findings revealed a host of complex issues and ideals that participants in this study desired for their students' holistic wellbeing. Variations in current practices in each school were as diverse as the communities themselves. Seven propositions were developed. Proposition One is that some Muslim schools have been products of Muslims' concerns over their future generations' faith and economic mobility, and, that their operations reflect a certain mindset for success, which at times, have inadvertently compromised students' holistic wellbeing. Proposition Two is that school imams and counsellors are key stakeholders to raise their school community's awareness and to facilitate acceptance of professional and culturally appropriate counselling support for Muslim students, whereas school leaders have a responsibility over the holistic wellbeing of students including those with specific and special needs.

The purpose of this study was to add to the knowledge base an understanding of the factors that encouraged or impeded Muslim women wearing hijab from attaining or advancing in positions of leadership in higher education. The researcher viewed the study through the lens of Critical Race Theory. The study population consisted of two Muslim female leaders at a multi-campus community college in the Midwest. Data collection methods included on-site observations, interviews, focus groups and an analysis of campus documents. Informal interviews were conducted with the Muslim female leaders' and their superior and a focus group was conducted with the leaders' colleagues at the campus and assisted in supporting and triangulating the data. The study findings articulated the importance of the role institutions of higher education played in creating environments that endorse inclusion for recruiting, employing, supporting, and promoting aspiring Muslim female leaders; and the importance of relationships or connecting with The Other- between Muslims and non Muslims in breaking down barriers and stereotypes of Muslim women to support recruit, employ, and promote aspiring Muslim female leaders. The results of this inquiry could impact both K-12 institutions and higher education institutions as they address the issue of engaging Muslim students, creating inclusive climates, and hiring Muslim staff, faculty, and administrators.
