Gender relations of production in Africa are often characterized by differential control over the division of labor, decision-making, and the allocation of resources. Mozambique, through its commitment to socialist transformation, has taken major steps to reorder gender relations of production at all levels. Based upon data collected in 1986, this paper focuses on changes in women's access to land for agricultural production using two case studies from Sofala Province -- one an integrated cooperative in Dondo District and the other a "women only" rice scheme in Beira. The paper argues that while women have generally benefited from the redistribution of land since independence, access to other resources and control over decision-making vary according to the type of development project in which women participate. Of the two projects discussed, women in the state-sponsored cooperative have better access to the group's resources and decision-making arenas than women in the bi-laterally aided rice scheme.

Beyond Inequalities is a series of publications which profile the status of women in Southern Africa, and the initiatives being made to mainstreamgender in development processes in the region. The series presents the situation of women and men in the Southern African Development Community(SADC) as a region, and in each member country; and reviews the roles and responsibilities, access to and control over resources, decision-making powers, needs and constraints of women vis-a-vis men. The series is forward looking, based on an assessment that inequalities are now generally acknowledged as an impediment to development and economic growth in most countries and regions of the world. The twelve country profiles document and analyse information along themes drawn from theCritical Areas of Concern identified in the Beijing Platform for Actionand derived from what the countries of the region consider to bepriorities. Each profile is in three parts: Situation Analysis, Policiesand Programmes, and the Way Forward, and each has references, bibliography, appendices, and illustrative tables, figures and boxes.

African women’s history is a vast topic that embraces a wide variety of societies in over 50 countries with different geographies, social customs, religions, and historical situations. Africa is a predominantly agricultural continent, and a major factor in African agriculture is the central role of women as farmers. It is estimated that between 65 and 80 percent of African women are engaged in cultivating food for their families, and in the past that percentage was likely even higher. Thus, one common thread across much of the continent is women’s daily work in their family plot. This second edition of Historical Dictionary of Women in Sub-Saharan Africa contains a chronology, an introduction, appendixes, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 700 cross-referenced entries on individual African women in history, politics, religion, and the arts; on important events, organizations, and publications; and on topics important to women in general (marriage, fertility, employment) and to African women in particular (market women, child marriage, queen mothers). This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about the Women in Africa.
